Local/global citizens?

I just gave £50 to Oxfam for my Dad's birthday, to support their appeal in Darfur. That's more money than I would have spent on him if I'd bought him a gift, but it's an infinitesimal amount compared to what will make a real difference to the people there. I buy coffee from Oxfam and encourage others to do so as well. Oxfam unwrapped took care of all our Christmas shopping and made people aware of what these sort of groups do.

Australia's got pretty shoddy asylum seeker legislation so I make sure I write to my Senators and representatives whenever something comes up in the news. I consider being an active citizen (as opposed to just a resident) including activities such as political activism, writing to politicians, marching and encouraging friends and family to join in. Ethical shopping is certainly part of being a global citizen as is making foreign issues local issues.
