Every once in a while I feel unsettled by the amount of work I've taken on with the two-jobs thing.
It's not that I mean to complain, and I hope it doesn't sound like that. I knew this first six or seven months would be tough, and I can see that they will be, and that's fine. I knew that going in. The strangest thing is how long it's been since I was new at any job. I have lots of volunteer experience and good relationships in the new workplace, but working there is still different. I have to manage my OWN expectations of myself as well as others'!
Anyway.
Friday night, at least this week I didn't have anything work-related to do! I went home and set a pork shoulder to brine overnight, so I could make the world's most elaborate pulled pork (it is SO good though!). And I went to bed early and slept a whole bunch.
Saturday was hot as hell. I mean, I actually REALLY like hot weather, but it was pretty rough out. I walked to the farmers market in the morning (around 10), and that wasn't too bad. But later I went out to see another movie at the AFI (Mike Birbiglia's Don't Think Twice, which made me have a lot of feels.) and I went into the CVS on the way (this was right around 3 p.m.) to get a candy bar to sneak in (I buy the soda and popcorn there, I just never want the movie-size chocolate things!). And the guy who rang me up was like, "So, hot out, hunh?" I could feel the sweat dripping off my face and hair in all sorts of attractive ways and I was like, "YEP IT SURE IS THANKS" and skedaddled. Hey, if I'm sweating that much it means I'm hydrated! I'm doing it right! It was hot, but I didn't feel ill or like I'd get dehydrated or heatstroke or anything! Between the farmers market and the movie I did a couple loads of laundry and noodled online. I'd gotten up at 7 a.m. and switched the pork from the brine-bath to the crockpot - it had to be in there for 12 hours. So when I got home from the movie I puttered and did a little writing in my journal, and I whipped up some Sriracha slaw to go with the Sriracha pulled pork. YUM!
So by 7:15 I took that out, let it sit for 45 minutes, shredded the meat, and made a DELICIOUS sandwich. This probably took me less than 30 seconds to consume. After 25 hours of prep. But I have LOTS of pork leftover! Hooray!
I went to bed at a pretty reasonable hour on Saturday night, and got up for church around the usual time (7:15ish). I fell down a bit of an internet hole reading articles and wound up really having to rush out the door, which makes me feel worse somehow now when I'm not just late for church - it's like I'm late for work! But I was only a minute or two late, it wasn't bad at all. The service was lovely, then I staffed the RE table for a while, then we had a meeting of the facilitators for the 8th grade sex/health ed class, then my boss and I chatted a while, then I ran out to get lunch, came back to the office for some work-time, then headed to the monthly Black Lives Matter vigil. (Pretty soon I'll have to work through those so I want to go to them while I can.) From there, I stood around chatting with a few friends for a bit, but it was still pretty damn hot out, so I hightailed it home with a stop at Trader Joe's on the way for groceries.
And I had all that delicious pork, but I'd had a late lunch and I wasn't hungry and I didn't want hot food so I just had a bowl of cereal for dinner, the end. =D
