Everything you could ever need to know about Zelman Clock, which is also a great backup in case the Wiki does something weird.

❝Our true essence is our Blood. The Blood we inherit endlessly is the truth behind Black Blood. It is difficult to hear its voice, but when you've wandered off your path, it's not wrong to clear your mind and listen to the blood flowing within. Your Blood will not betray you. ► APPEARANCE

Zelman is frequently described as an "extremely beautiful" young man. He's about 5'7", with a wiry frame that hides his surprising strength. His posture could usually be described as lazy, as he stands with all his weight on one leg and his hands in his pockets. He always seems to have an air of confidence about him, and his body language almost never betrays the persona he's playing. He can make people twice his size nervous with the way he carries himself, as he practically oozes smugness.

He's pretty pale, even for a vampire, and his incisors are fairly obvious when he speaks. His eyes are blood red, hence several of his titles, and his hair is dyed in shades of red that vary from time to time. He's actually blond, but good luck figuring that out. Both his ears are pierced with gold, circular earrings. He dresses for comfort rather than style, often walking around in things like a track suit and tennis shoes. All of his other clothes are simple, and his color range sticks to reds, blacks, and whites. He rarely goes anywhere without his signature black toque on. He hates formal dress, but still takes very good care of his overall appearance, especially his hair.

► PERSONALITY

Sometimes cold and sometimes kind, Zelman's outward personality is essentially a charming lie. His default persona is that of an arrogant, flighty, and manipulative person, one who finds a great deal of amusement in making other people angry or uncomfortable. This is best seen during the meeting of all the other faction leaders in the Special Zone. Though he's treated with a great deal of respect by the others, likely due to the amount of power he holds over the city and the potential for destruction he harbors, he does nothing but insult the rest of them or point out the flaws in their plans for most of the meeting. He continues this behavior even after he's threatened by a vampire much more powerful than himself, which shows he either thinks himself above everyone or simply doesn't see any reason to follow their rules. Though he constantly points out their faults, he offers no help of his own, seeming content to just cause problems.

He often shows a laid back nature and disinterest in other people's ordeals to the point of irresponsible laziness, like how he basically ignored his own second-in-command because dealing with him would be "annoying". His flighty nature is partly shown by the Coven complaining that he doesn't care about them, even though he's the one who brought them together in the first place; they speak as if they are now a discarded project. Another example of this is him letting the boat carrying several Kowloon members escape after a half-hearted attempt to destroy them, saying, "I guess that does it. If [the others] let her escape, it'll give me an excuse to insult them."

Despite things not keeping his attention for long and his blatantly irresponsible nature, he's shown himself again and again to be incredibly insightful, knowledgeable, and clever. He's always the first one to point out when the bad guys are sneaking around under the good guys' noses, and he knows about Kotarou's past despite how Jirou and Co. had worked to keep that information on the down-low. He even befriends Kotarou, partly because of his importance, but mostly because he knew Kotarou would eventually lead him back to Cassa, who he wanted a fight with.

He knows how to tweak his outward personality to get what he wants, and despite what he usually shows people, he can be polite, patient, and debonair if the situation calls for it. His first meeting with Jirou, Kotarou, and Mimiko is an excellent example of this; although he initially expressed excitement and dropped all his other projects over the idea of finally meeting the famed Silver Blade, he managed to keep his usual personality mostly under wraps and maintain a polite, slightly less defiant version of himself for the entirety of their meeting. He acts in a similar manner when he rescues and helps out Kotarou later, though this version of his personality is much more natural, free of political implication, and he speaks his mind to the young vampire instead of thinking one thing and saying another. No matter what face he puts on, he very rarely appears anything other than smug. Even the feelings of rage Cassa manages to evoke from him and his surprise towards Sayuka quickly vanish, only to be replaced with his usual smirk and a catty comment.

Somehow, through all his negativity, people still can't help but be drawn to his confidence and odd character. He's good at convincing people to do what he wants (how else would he have formed the Coven?) and he's not quite as hard on the people who would willingly follow him to his end.

This outside persona is, of course, a fabrication. That personality is one he's built up over eight-hundred years, and he's found it's what gets him what he wants the most often. Truthfully, he's a complete sociopath with almost no regard for others. Though the days that earned him the title of the "Red-Eyed Murderer" are over, he shows he's still capable of destroying without remorse or hesitation. He massacres an entire mansion full of vampires-turned-Kowloon who were once under his command, muttering little more than a, "Jeez. How annoying." Even the people close to him are treated more like toys and tools than people, such as Sayuka, whom he berates and ignores even though she's his personal assistant by his own choice. Jinnai, a human he seems to like, gets slightly suggestive insults in the place of compliments. Kotarou seems to be the only one he isn't cruel or disrespectful towards, and even then, he doesn't do much to act like a good role-model for the kid ("Zelman-san, you shouldn't say that. The Special Zone could be in real trouble!" His reply, "Don't be such a stiff").

He's basically a delinquent, and an incredibly bored one at that. He only does things that interest or benefit himself, usually only prodding in other people's business because it seems like a fun idea at the time. In the series, many Old Bloods say they can't see what kind of advantage Zelman's political side could possibly gain from having Jirou in his group, since Zelman so frequently keeps out of the world's larger matters. Zelman himself eventually admits that he only wants Jirou because he would bring more trouble to the Special Zone... which means more entertainment. He openly considers himself to be one of the bad guys, but says that just because someone is a bad guy doesn't mean that they're trash--evil can have value, too. He never once shows any feelings of regret, remorse, sadness, or fear throughout the entire series. He seems to operate mostly on cold logic, though as he explains to Kotarou, he believes it's never wrong to follow your "Blood's voice"--something equatable to a "gut instinct".

Zelman has lived most of his life alone and obviously hasn't minded, otherwise he would have changed that sometime during his eight-hundred years of living. However, after watching the world for so long, he's come to decide that he really can't stand it much anymore. In the novelization, he explains to Sayuka that everything of worth in the world is dead and gone and that he, too, should be gone. He further explains that all vampires seek death, and that he is no exception--however, he refuses to die in any way less than what deems worthy of his legacy. He wants to die in battle, fighting to the best of his ability.

He's very prideful, and the bloodline he inherited from his sire is perhaps the only thing truly important to him. He explains to Kotarou that living by their blood is the best and only way a vampire should live, and that it's important to trust in its voice. Zelman's bloodline is said to be defined by chaos, and he feels the closest to it in war. This is why he constantly surrounds himself with turmoil and conflict, both consciously and subconsciously. He believes strongly in personal freedom, and won't stand for anyone trying to hold him back from what he views as his destiny.

It should be noted that, despite his strong dislike of other people and the world around him, he occasionally gets attached to and is fond of certain individuals. This is a very rare thing, but it happens. A good example of this is Kotarou, whom he originally used to get to a certain end. He ended up genuinely liking the kid, eventually saying that they should go out for ramen again sometime. The author of the original light novels describes Zelman's ability to like Kotarou as "the same way a delinquent could like a puppy." He likes people who quietly understand, accept, and look out for him without trying to right his wrongs. This is probably why he eventually picks Sayuka as the one to inherit his bloodline, because despite all that he puts her through, she's proven herself to be determined and loyal to him time and time again.

► HISTORY

As a human, Zelman lived a nondescript life in 13th century Poland up until about the age of sixteen, when he was turned into a vampire by his Sire, "The War God" Asura. He pretty much ditched the human life to go chill with his bloodline, and he quickly grew to have quite the reputation. Barely a century in, his Blood became engaged in a war to prove their bloodline to the rest of the Black Blood world, as before then they were just considered a new line; weaklings with no standing. The rest of his bloodline perished, but he alone was able to survive, crushing every single enemy that faced him. After that, he was known as the Red-Eyed Murderer, as well as half-a-dozen other titles, and he continued to carry on his Blood's legacy of chaos and war wherever he went. He was viewed with awe and respect, but also feared and loathed by many. He was alone for most of the rest of his life, and he never really minded.

Of course, time continued forward, even if he didn't. People vanished, enemies became scarce, and the old ways of honor and glory faded away and were deemed "irrelevant". He found himself increasingly disgusted with other people as time went on. He drifted about, doing pretty much whatever he wanted. His love of warfare never died, of course, and neither did his reputation.

Fast forward to 1997, when these not-so-awesome vampires called the Kowloon Children spread their vampirism on to anyone they bit (unlike most vampires, who have to go through a while Kiss of Death ritual to get anyone turned) and caused their numbers to grow exponentially. Humans found out that vampires were real, and one giant war later, the Kowloons were mostly defeated. The remaining vampires hushed everything up, spread the word that all vampires were extinct, and built up a city on an island off the coast of Japan called the "Special Zone", which was supposed to be a new secret safe haven for vampires and humans to live peacefully together.

Now, Zelman had been in Tibet the whole time, so he wasn't really a part of the war. He moved to the Special Zone soon after it was started, though, and there he set up his own collection of nefarious and notoriously lawles vampires known as the Coven. Through the fact that he was super-powerful and really fucking scary, he secured a seat as one of the leaders of the Special Zone. The Coven got boring for him pretty fast, so he basically ended up ignoring them. Eventually he picked up his personal assistant, Sayuka, who ran his life so that he didn't have to. He toyed around with her feeble human emotions daily. All of this took up about ten years of his life.

Eventually, the guy who ended the whole Kowloon mess, Jirou, came to the Special Zone with his little brother. Zelman's blatant disregard of the Coven led to many of them acting freely, and Zelman's very own second-in-command decided that it would be a great idea to defeat Jirou and take all the glory that went with it. It didn't work out so well for the second-in-command, who went home humiliated and full of rage at everything, but Zelman thought it was a perfect opportunity. He arranged a meeting with Jirou to apologize for his second-in-command kind of trying to kill them. They established some kind of understanding of each other's position and Zelman chatted with Jirou, his brother Kotarou, and their guide, Mimiko, about where they would go next. Zelman was interested in Jirou because of his potential for chaos, but Kotarou's personality interested him more. He could not convince them to join the Coven, but expressed that he was just as happy to have the chance to face them as an enemy in the future.

Then he showed up to a very important meeting of Special Zone leaders and basically insulted everyone the entire time. They discussed the presence of more Kowloon Children in the Special Zone, and Sayuka called to say that there were kind of some crazy-ass Kowloon Children killing each other in the Coven mansion. Very little was done about it, because Zelman is bad with responsibility and has no prioritizing skills.

When Kotarou was lost in the Special Zone, Zelman came to his rescue and kicked the shit out of some teenagers that were threatening to rob him (and other... things...). Afterwords they went to go eat ramen and Zelman told the kid all about what he considers the true and only way to live as a Black Blood; according to one's bloodline. Kotarou actually listened to him and took his advice into consideration, which made Zelman pretty happy. In return, Zelman then helped Kotarou track down Mimiko, and in the process, let Kotarou lead him to Cassa, a leader of the new Kowloon Children that he wanted a fight with. Though it was obvious he had her beat, she revealed at the last minute that she'd spread the Kowloon blood to all of Coven, as well as other parts of the city. Whoops.

With Cassa having gotten away with it, Zelman went back and torched the entire Coven mansion and the surrounding area to kill any vampires who had been turned into Kowloon children--and he was very irritated all the while. Once that was done, he caught up with Jirou and the gang and threw in a vague attempt at stopping the Kowloon leaders from leaving the Special Zone, but eventually he let them go out of boredom and decided that if the heroes couldn't stop them... well, it'd just be a reason to make fun of them later.

The Pull sucked him up after the Coven had more or less reformed into something substantial, the Special Zone was back to normal, and Zelman'd been dealing with illegal deals from people trying to bargain their way into his protection. And by "dealing with", I mean that he'd been mostly ignoring everything, as per usual.

► VAMPIRE STUFF

Feel free to ask me questions with any of this stuff. Shit gets weird.

→ ABILITIES
  • Can do all sorts of cool shit with fire. This ability is called "Eye Ignite."
    • "Raen" is basically a giant fireball attack. And I do mean giant.
    • He has total control over temperature, size, how quickly the fire spreads, etc.
    • He can use this to evaporate large bodies of water, creating instant fog-cover.
    • He keeps his internal temperature pretty warm, so he's like a giant, walking heater.
    • Any flames already in the room are prone to changing size and shape with his moods.
    • His eyes glow red whenever he uses this ability at long-distance or in great amounts.
  • He possesses a sort of hypnotic ability known as "Eye Raid." All vampires possess this ability.
    • His eyes glow blue whenever he uses this ability, and it requires eye contact to initiate.
    • He can freeze people in their tracks, making almost all movement impossible. Talking is still an option.
    • On that same line, he can force people to black out or fall asleep through this ability.
    • He can look into a person's mind with this ability, but this is tricky and kind of dangerous for him.
    • He can lock people out of certain memories or information, making it impossible for them to talk about it.
  • He has some quick-healing going for him.
    • His body will heal on it's own much, much faster than that of a normal human. He can regenerate entire limbs.
    • He can speed up this process, but it's very tough on his body for him to do so, and it uses up more energy than usual.
    • Alternatively, he can choose to slow or halt the healing process entirely. If, you know. He needed to.
    • Because he's got practically no fear of injury and has, thus, gotten himself injured a lot, he's got one hell of a threshold for pain.
  • His senses are all exponentially stronger than a human's.
    • Sight: Could easily make out and recognize Mimiko's figure from half a mile off. His vision isn't hindered by darkness.
    • Sight: He can choose to look at a person's blood, making everything else appear practically see-through. It's a lot like heat vision.
    • Smell: His sense of smell is particularly strong, and he can track almost anyone by the scent of the blood in their veins.
    • Smell: Like all Black Blood, he can pick up the scent of any other vampires who've preyed on a person before.
    • Hearing: He has good hearing, but heartbeats are particularly easy for him to zero in on.
    • Hearing: He sometimes listens in on a person's heartbeat to tell if they're lying or getting nervous.
    • Taste, Touch: Both incredibly fine-tuned, though there are no particular abilities or tricks attached.
  • And he has an assortment of other odd abilities that don't fit anywhere else.
    • He's got immunity to disease, and is mostly immune to drugs or alcohol.
    • Has serious super-strength and ridiculously fast reflexes.
    • He's good at appearing out of nowhere and disappearing when you aren't looking, but you will never see him run.
    • Though not nearly as strong as Sei's, he can use his very aura to cause people around him to feel sick, nervous, or irritated.
    • He's good at reading auras, able to pick out an out-of-place Kowloon in an entire city full of vampires. From the comfort of his living room.
    • He can walk on walls and ceilings. Gravity is totally his bitch.
    • He can jump freakishly high and land from super-long drops without injury.
    • He can theoretically defend his mind from mental attacks and attempts at control (a natural defense against other vampires using Eye Raid).
→ WEAKNESSES
  • There are some things that will irritate him, but are not lethal on their own:
    • He's naturally avoidant of running water, but it doesn't actually hurt him.
    • Sunlight gives him a headache. But that's about it. He just chills out in the shade a lot.
    • He gets uncomfortable in churches or other places filled with large amounts of religious faith.
    • Garlic makes him kind of sick, but mostly just causes him to complain.
    • It's possible to ward an area with your aura so that he can't physically enter without your permission.
    • His physical composition is mostly still human, so he's prone to injury just like anyone else.
  • And then there's some of the more effective stuff, from least to most harmful:
    • Crucifixes and other holy objects, when the user possesses a great deal of faith in their cause.
    • Holy water, in particular, will act like a mild to moderate acid against his skin.
    • Head-wounds, while not necessarily lethal, could seriously fuck him up for a while through temporary brain damage.
    • Because it's too wacky to try and imagine otherwise, decapitation would leave him pretty dead.
    • Wounds caused by silver weapons are very difficult for him to heal and literally cause his blood to boil.
→ OMNOMNOM
  • He technically only needs to feed once every three months or so, but he's indulgent.
  • The bite of a vampire in this series is supposed to feel better than sex. It gets very sexy very fast. :|a
  • Because of this and the resonance effect (see below), being bitten is a highly addictive experience for most people.
  • Being bitten will not turn you into a vampire. To be turned, he must willingly feed you some of his blood.
  • For whatever reason, the blood of virgins (especially ladies) is a great deal more potent than any other kind.
  • Considering the nature of Paradisa's residents, weird things might happen with weird blood.
  • Resonance is so weird that it gets it's own paragraph. After Zelman drinks another person's blood, their blood is inside of his body. This causes the unusual phenomena wherein whoever was bitten feels as though they are inside of Zelman as well, both in his head and in his skin. Resonance typically lasts an hour, maybe more or less depending on how much blood Zelman took. The level of experience a person shares with Zelman during that time also depends on the individual and what they choose to perceive and what Zelman decides to force upon them. While the person has full access to Zelman, it does not work vice-versa. Zelman is still completely independent of the person, and gets no insight into said person's mind or actions. If the person is drained of blood to the point of passing out, they may experience strange dreams along the lines of the effects of resonance, or you can choose to have them forgo the experience entirely with a dreamless sleep. A person can experience any combination of the following:
    • Physical effects: Not only will they be seeing through Zelman's eyes, hearing everything he hears, and feeling like they're moving when Zelman is moving, they will gain insight into the experience of being a Black Blood--and an unreasonably powerful one, at that. All the physical traits in this section are examples of how one might feel when their blood is resonating within him. It's possible that a person's physical body will sometimes move to match whatever Zelman is doing, and a person's senses may switch back and forth between what they are perceiving and what Zelman is perceiving. While they are linked, they will be able to feel any pain that Zelman feels as if it were their own.
    • Emotional effects: The person who's blood is in Zelman's veins would be able to tell where Zelman is for the entire resonance, regardless of the distance put between them. They would be able to feel his emotions, which is a little frightening, considering he has very few. Those few are strong, though, and his intense hatred or cruelty could become overwhelming. On the flip-side, if he is happy, or if he enjoys something, a person could gain insight into why it makes him happy. Perhaps the most useful out of this is that a person would be able to easily tell whether or not Zelman is lying when he speaks to them or to other people (and protip: he usually is).
    • Mental effects: Should someone choose to be brave, they can listen to his thoughts. He thinks in a bizarre mash-up of old dialects and abstract fragments, which might drift in and out of actually making any discernible sense. A person can sift through his memories and may get visions of what he is planning or remembering at any given time. Though he can't hear what said person is thinking, he can bring up particular thoughts, images, or memories for others to see while the resonance is in effect. He often does this to try and drown out the effects of resonance when he doesn't want a particular person trying to trudge through his disturbing and twisted mind to try and figure him out.
→ OTHER STUFF
  • It was suggested early in the series that the full moon affects a vampire's power... and then it was never brought up again.
  • He doesn't have a heartbeat. The whole stake through the heart thing is useless on him.
  • Blood, severed limbs, and any other part of himself that gets detached will quickly turn to ash when it's away from his body.
  • He doesn't have to breathe, but it's kind of necessary if he wants to be able to talk.
  • He's naturally nocturnal, and is awake for an average of 22 hours a day. He takes naps.
  • He shows up in mirrors and photographs just fine.
  • He can't turn into a bat, sorry. ):
