As I poked through an abandoned WIP pile and discovered stories that I wrote a few years ago and apparently thought were awful but now seem decent, plus fell down the rabbit-hole of a new fandom, I came to some musings. Hence the following ramblings:

My thoughts exactly. When I first starting posting fanfiction I was thrilled to get comments and kudos. Then I'd get a little sad if a story didn't get comments and kudos. I would think "what am I doing wrong? Do people not like my stories? Should I be writing differently?" But I have now evolved to the point where I really don't care. I am writing for me. For my own enjoyment and self expression. I don't want to change my writing the way I've changed other things in my life just to please the general public. Now if I get a comment or kudo, it's just icing on the cake.

every single one of which I thought, at some point, was awful, but every single one of which is, ultimately, written 1st because I had to write it, even if what crawled out of the muse is O_o

I can so commiserate with this feeling! May I offer this, FWIW: Not awful. Not even a wee bit ;)
