So far, being 30 hasn't been bad. It feels about like 29 did. Thanks to everyone who wished me well.

I've found myself with some time on my hands at work, and thought it'd be a good idea to update.

I'd like to upgrade my computers at home. My Mac is on the list of systems that won't run Leopard. My PC won't run the recent graphics update ( Read more... )

All they know is that my name is tempest and my password for the site, and a bunch of numbers.

Could be anyone, could be anywhere, could be any numbers. Nothing really personally identifiable. Otherwise I, too, would've skipped it.

take a look at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148076 for some Crucial memory for about the same price after mail in. i have been using them for a while and have loved every stick i got. i may have to order some of this myself...hmmm.

also, congratulations on getting your finances under control. hsmithmier handles ours and would surely provide advice and experiences if you want to talk to someone who has been through it.

I've always loved Kingston memory, due to a story a buddy of mine tells:

He bought an 80's era mini-computer, a VAX to be specific, that happened to have Kingston RAM in it. It malfunctioned in some way. He contacted Kingston, talked to them about the RAM, they said "We haven't made that in years. But Lifetime warranty is just that. We'll have some overnighted."

I figure for $20/gig it can't be beat.

Finances-wise, I may pick H's brain about the best way to go about doing some of the things I need to do, but princessmargo has pretty good ideas about most things. :)

While I've heard and repeated rumors regarding their replacement of long-out-of-production ram modules for old gear including Vaxen, it was for a Sun sparcstation that I have direct personal experience and it was probably about 4 years after the end of life when this replacement was made. Still, it was a "none in stock, we'll have to do one using our Just-In-Time manufacturing magic assuming parts availability or ease of redesign." Additionally, it was phoned in at about 3pm PST and was at the office the next morning. It took less than three minutes to go through the return process and since then I've been loyal to Kingston. So far, I've yet to need a replacement for any other Kingston ram modules other than when the wrong product was ordered. Can't say the same about any other vendors.

Also, Micron/Crucial is a good second choice. Their lifetime guarantee carries about as much weight as Kingston. Still, I prefer and recommend Kingston for previously mentioned reasons.
