Where I follow some Torchwood-related pages. Yes, I hate when writers have Jack call Ianto 'Yan', because that would just never happen. I, too, do not love woobie Ianto. Other than that, I totally agree with you. I think in most (make that all) male/male pairing writers decide to give the macho/manly, hard man personality to one character and the vulnerable, sweet, little, in need to be protected to the other despite what we've seen in canon. Same thing happens here too.
Personally, I'm all in favour of the creator to so as they please with their characters. Only some times, what they do is only in favour of shock value and "drama". And I think it's ridiculous. And that's what RTD tries to do (well, that and push Gwen down our throats in a violent way! :))

I agree with what you say about Jack calling Ianto Yan, but if I was to go with canon, I'd have to had Gwen on first, second and last, top of the tops as well. Which no!
Audience has to see how the creator made the character. In Gwen's situation we got all talk about how brilliant, human, the heart of torchwood she was, but when she came to actions she was anything but. And Jack cared for her for all the reasons that weren't shown. You can't just say it, you have to show it as well. I always thought that Gwen was the same as Rose from Doctor Who and in end, RTD managed to make me dislike both.
I like reading your opinions! :)
