I am not exactly sure what you mean by "egoic self". But I will try to comment from what I think you mean. If what you mean by ego is a person's sense of individuality, I have to disagree that the ego is simply "a defensive structure of the mind which projects anxiety onto things in the world".
But since I am not sure what you mean I will not comment further. Please elaborate.
