Seokjin has always liked festivals, but out of all of them, the Alice Festival could be considered as his favorite.
Central Town, usually lined with food stalls and clothing stores now has lots of other merchandise, like masks and ribbons and toys. Even though they do say that you could find everything you need in Central Town, there are some items that they sell only during the festival, attracting even more customers.
Central Town is usually filled with people on weekends, but since they’re celebrating the festival for the whole week, more students are filling the marketplace. Personally though, Seokjin likes sticking to the Howalon stall the most, even though he could usually afford only one box of the treat. It’s a commodity of luxury, sure, but Seokjin likes to treat himself sometimes.
This year though, he’s decided to save up and buy two boxes of Howalon, one for himself and another for his little brother, who’s just entered the academy at the beginning of the semester.
Jungkook’s eyes practically sparkle in delight once he’s been given the box of treats, excitedly lifting open the lid of the box. It reminds him a lot of the cotton candy their mother used to buy for him during Sundays at the park, but this one is colored plain white and is softer. He wonders if clouds would also taste like this, because they bear great resemblance with each other.
Seokjin’s smile reaches up to his ears, glad that his brother is enjoying himself. Jungkook had always pushed himself to the limit, practicing proper manipulation over his fire Alice every day and Seokjin wants him to at least take a rest and go enjoy his childhood while it’s still not over.
He knows Jungkook always tends to overwork himself, being the perfectionist that he is, but he’s at least thankful that the Dangerous Ability Class has been abolished, because he knows for certain that if it weren’t, Jungkook would have been assigned there and he would have had needed to intervene, not wanting his brother to participate in any of the academy’s dirty work.
“You’re brother’s so cute,” Namjoon says from beside him, and Seokjin almost jumps in surprise. He’s been too absorbed in observing his brother that he’s forgotten that Namjoon was there at all, and he feels slightly ashamed at himself for that. “I wish he were my sibling.”
Seokjin takes a bite from a Howalon and lets it melt in his mouth, savoring the taste. He doesn’t know if heaven is real, but this is the best-tasting food he’s ever eaten in his life that when it would come up to comparisons, he thinks it might be true that Howalon tastes like heaven in your mouth. When he looks back at Namjoon, he sees his friend discreetly eyeing the treat in his hands, but it’s already so obvious that he just sighs at Namjoon’s attempt at trying to hide his want for the treat. “You already have a sister, Namjoon.”
“But she always talks back to me.” Namjoon frowns. Seokjin offers him the box of Howalons he’s holding, and Namjoon gladly takes one, chewing on it thoughtfully instead of just letting it melt in his mouth, like Seokjin does. Namjoon has always been the practical one, buying his money with supplies instead of luxury items even when he gets more allowance compared to Seokjin, given his special star status. Seokjin indulges him with food anyway, because he knows that Namjoon would probably die eating the same meal for his whole life without him, anyway. “Children nowadays don’t know anything about respect.”
“Namjoon please, you talk like you’re already an ahjussi.” Seokjin laughs, and Namjoon couldn’t help but laugh along too, knowing that it’s true.
There’s someone wearing a bear costume that stops in front of them, handing out flyers. “Hi hyungs! The Special Ability Class is going to have a mock Olympics for the School Festival this time. I hope you guys come!”
“Oh, and Seokjin hyung! Don’t forget what you’re in charge of! We’re going to have a meeting later to finalize everything for tomorrow.” It takes a moment for Seokjin to recognize that the voice belongs to Park Jimin, one of the kids from his Special Ability Class. He’s known Jimin for quite a while and now they’re even both in the high school department, but they’ve never really talked that much. Sure he was cute (which was mainly the reason why Seokjin remembered his name in the first place), but aside from his year level and his name, Seokjin doesn’t know much about him, their interactions limited to their joint extra class in Special Abilities.
From what he’s noticed though, Jimin’s the type to get easily embarrassed, so he’s surprised that Jimin’s agreed into doing this. Jokwon, their class adviser might have pulled out some strings to get him into this.
“Oh, hey there little kid!” Jimin takes notice of Jungkook sitting beside Seokjin, licking his fingers clean. All of the Howalon in the box is already gone, the box lying empty on his lap. “You wanna come to the Special Ability Type’s Olympics tomorrow?”
It’s a tiny detail that has slipped Seokjin’s mind, but before he could do anything to stop it, Jungkook is already crying, gripping at his hand. He could have stopped this from happening earlier on, but he had only remembered a bit too late, and now Jungkook is crying and… well, Jimin’s costume is on fire.
Jimin flails around in panic, tripping on his feet because of the heaviness of the costume he’s wearing. He tries to put out the flames by rolling on the ground, but it’s still no good.
It’s a good thing that Namjoon belongs to the Technology Ability Class, because his Alice of Invention is put to good use as he pulls out a hydrogun from the tool bag that always hangs around his waist, quickly extinguishing the flames on Jimin’s costume. Seokjin doesn’t even know how he fits all of his tools in there but at least everything’s okay now, and he breathes a sigh of relief.
He makes to stand up to help Jimin up, but Jungkook’s clutch on his hand becomes tighter, his younger brother looking up at him with scared eyes.
“It’s okay Jungkook, it’s just Jimin.” He pats his brother’s head, wiping his tears away. “He’s not going to eat me, okay?” Reluctantly, Jungkook lets go of his hand, using the sleeves of his uniform to wipe at his face. He’s still sniffing, but at least he’s calmed down a bit.
“Here,” Seokjin offers a hand to Jimin, and the latter takes it gratefully, standing up to his full height. “Sorry about that. My brother’s afraid of mascots and stuff, and he kind of does that thing with his Alice when he acts in self-defense.”
“He’s still a kid, he couldn’t control his emotions well,” Jimin shakes his head, sighing. “Well, I’m just glad I’m not dead.” Jimin dusts off the dirt on his costume. There are still bits of ashes on his back, and Seokjin helps him dust them off.
“Do you want me to bring you to the infirmary? You need to get yourself checked, you might have had sustained some burns.” Seokjin offers.
“Nah, I’m good,” Jimin faces Seokjin, and the perpetual smile on the bear head he’s wearing kind of creeps Seokjin out. “This costume’s freakin’ hot, but at least it’s thick. I don’t think the flame got past the first layer at all.” Seokjin sighs in relief.
“Your brother though… he seems really scared.” Seokjin turns his neck to look back at Jungkook. His hands are shaking, but there’s a defiant look on his face, like he’s willing himself not to be scared. He’s only eight, but he’s always tried so hard to keep himself from showing any fear, always doing his best so that no one would worry about him.
Before Seokjin has a say on it, Jimin walks towards Jungkook with deliberate steps, carefully taking off the bear head he’s wearing. Jungkook blinks in surprise at seeing Jimin’s actual face. He flinches as if he’s physically hurt when Jimin kneels down in front of him, squeezing his eyes tightly shut, but when seconds pass by and nothing happens, he opens his eyes, more of curiosity in his expression than fear.
“Hello there, I’m Jimin! What’s your name?” Jimin tilts his head to the side, giving Jungkook a warm smile, and Seokjin notices how his eyes turn into small crescents. It’s not the first time that he’s seen Jimin smile as every time he sees Jimin, he’s always smiling, greeting everyone with warmth. But right now, despite the redness of Jimin’s face from the heat of wearing the costume and the sweat trickling down his face, Seokjin is captivated and he couldn’t turn away.
“J-Jungkook,” Jungkook answers, still looking wary.
“There’s nothing to be scared of, Jungkook. This is just a costume,” Jimin says, pointing at what he’s wearing. “I’m human, just like you.”
“Do you have an Alice too?”
“Yes.”
“Then you’re a student here?”
“Yes, I’m a student here, too. Just like you and your brother. And Namjoon-hyung too, of course.” He adds with a laugh when Namjoon protests loudly with a “What about me, then?”
“Do you want to see a rainbow, Jungkook?” Jimin asks, to which Jungkook eagerly replies with a yes, along with eager nodding. Jimin gives a shy laugh. “It’s not much, but there,” Jimin says, pointing to the clear skies. At first Seokjin doesn’t notice it, but then different colors of light bend and form a curved line in the sky, and Jungkook claps in delight, fear and doubt no longer in his face.
“There’s one over there, too!” Jimin points at a puddle that has formed when Namjoon put out the fire on his costume with the hydrogun, and when they all look at it, the water looks like it’s been lit up, the colors of the rainbow swirling inside it. Jungkook screams in delight, running over to poke at the puddle.
Seeing Jungkook like this makes Seokjin smile further, but seeing the way Jimin looks back at him and smiles, he isn’t really sure if he’s happy just because he’s seeing Jungkook happy.
“Oh, I almost forgot! I still have to finish giving away all these flyers.” Jimin stands up abruptly, gathering all of the flyers that have fallen over when he caught fire. Some of them are already wet, but Jimin still collects them all into a single pile in his arms. Within seconds, they’re already dry, and Seokjin wonders whether that happening has something to do with his Alice. “See you tomorrow in the Special Abilities Class’ Olympics, Seokjin-hyung! You too, Namjoon-hyung!”
“What prize does the winner get?” Namjoon asks.
“It’s a surprise!” Jimin takes the bear head in his other arm and bids Jungkook goodbye. “I hope to see you at the Olympics tomorrow!” he says, waving at them using the hand holding the flyers.
“Huh, I didn’t know you liked them young.” Namjoon comments once Jimin has turned his back and is out of earshot. Jungkook is still playing with the puddle, wondering if there’s a way to turn the colors off and on again, or if it’s possible to get the puddle to turn into different shades of black.
“What?” Seokjin asks. Because really, what the hell does Namjoon even mean?
“You have a crush on Park Jimin. No, don’t even deny it,” Namjoon raises a hand when Seokjin inhales, knowing that his friend would only protest. “You were gaping at him the whole time. And even back then, I would notice that you keep on glancing at his direction whenever he’s around.”
Seokjin blinks. He hasn’t even noticed that he’s been doing that, thinking that he’s only known things about Jimin just because he notices things sometimes and not because he’s been keenly observing.
“So what’s his Alice? Light manipulation?” He asks instead to change the topic. Namjoon just sighs, like ahjussis do when they meet helpless teenagers. “It’s actually more like-“
“Weather control?” Seokjin tries again, remembering that if Jimin’s Alice was light manipulation, maybe he could have made a rainbow in his hands or using a mirror instead and that doing the trick involved water and the sky.
“Something like that,” Namjoon smiles at him mysteriously, the dimples on his cheeks showing, and Seokjin wonders what he actually means by that vague comment. “But you know what real talent is?”
Seokjin shakes his head, unable to know where Namjoon is heading at. What’s the difference between a talent and an Alice, anyway? Weren’t those two things just one and the same? Sometimes he thinks that Namjoon is just too smart that he sees and understands things that most people don’t. Or maybe he’s just really gone crazy.
Namjoon smiles again, glancing at Jungkook, who’s still having fun with the puddle. “He makes people happy.”
Seokjin still doesn’t understand what Namjoon meant by that, but he thinks he could agree that Park Jimin has the ability to make people happy.
****************
Jungkook helps out the next day by setting off the fireworks to begin the Special Ability Class’s Olympics, and even though Seokjin wouldn’t have wanted him tinkering with dangerous things, the wide smile on Jungkook’s face when the members of the Special Ability Class thanks him for coming by to help is enough to appease him.
Someone stands beside Seokjin, and he turns around to catch Jimin smiling up at him. He suddenly remembers what Namjoon had told him the previous day in Central Town.
“Are you ready to put on a show tonight, hyung?” Jimin asks. He’s still smiling, and Seokjin couldn’t help but smile back. Maybe Namjoon had been right about Jimin’s talent being associated with making people happy.
“You should help me, I might mess up.” He replies, grinning along.
Jimin puts a hand on his back and pats him good-naturedly. Seokjin feels his heart freeze up, as if the moment would last if he doesn’t move and pretend that time is at a standstill. “Don’t worry hyung, I’m here for you.”
The loudness of the explosion of all the firecrackers put together could not compare to the sound of the beating of his heart. At this moment, nothing could ever subdue him.
Possibly nothing but Jimin's presence.
