a/n: Here’s a bonus fic for the Birthday Project! Now, it’s time to write some angst kekekeke

“Hyung, are you out of your mind? What if Namjoon-hyung accidentally burns the whole kitchen down?” Seokjin flinches at Jimin’s sudden outburst, pulling his phone a good few inches away from his ear. Jimin does tend to be hysterical sometimes whenever it comes to someone’s safety and health, and even though he’s almost practically shrieking when he adds “And don’t even think of considering Yoongi-hyung! What if he falls asleep and lets Taehyung roam around his place? The kid might end up eating glue and song sheets!” Seokjin finds it adorable that he cares for a child that he hasn’t even met yet.

“Jimin, I was just considering other options,” Seokjin laughs, and he could practically hear Jimin’s pout when he replies with a “Don’t even think about it.”

“Okay, okay, I won’t leave him with any of my friends. You have a point. Either one of them could end up dying.”

“But I’m still not cancelling on you,” Jimin reminds him. He sighs, and when he speaks again, his voice has softened. “You can let Taehyung come with us. It’s okay, really.”

Seokjin’s ears perk up upon hearing that. Thinking practically, it solves the entire problem: he could take care of his nephew but still go on a date with Jimin at the same time. The problem though, is what might happen in the duration of their date. “I just… don’t want our first date to get ruined.” He admits. It’s not their first date, per se, but it’s the first time they’re going out together and putting a label on it, so it still kind of counts as their first actual date.

Taehyung is a nice kid, but he’s always been directly categorized as annoying by most of the adults he’s been with without them trying to understand the child, and Seokjin doesn’t want that to happen with Jimin.

“Of course I don’t want that to happen either,” Jimin acts in defense. “But first dates mostly never go the way we all plan, right?” Seokjin smiles to himself. The first date he’s ever gone to had been a disaster, and ever since then, he’s always planned for his other dates to go well, but something always seems to happen on the day of the date to ruin everything. Thankfully though, Jimin is understanding, and that’s all he needs.

“Just so you know though, Taehyung’s a really… hyperactive kid.” He warns.

Hyperactive? No problem. Kids have always been hyperactive, and Jimin has had to deal with a lot of children when he’s joined volunteer work for his previous elementary school. “I can live with that.”

Surely, it wouldn’t be that hard, right?

=======

Taehyung is running from stall-to-stall and Jimin is trying hard to keep up with the kid’s energy, carrying bags of the food and clothes they bought in one hand and dragging Seokjin with the other. Seokjin looks like he’s about to pass out from running too much, panting heavily with a hand to his side. He’s sweaty from chasing Taehyung around the stalls of Seoul with Jimin, but he seems… happy? Jimin couldn’t find the right words for it, but Seokjin looks like he’s glad all three of them are together, right here, where stalls-after-stalls are lined up in the bazaar area.

“Taehyung, you shouldn’t keep on running ahead without us!” Jimin tells him once they catch up with Taehyung standing in front of a ddeokbokki stall, gaping at the photos of food on the menu behind the ahjussi manning the stall. “What if something happens to you and we’re not around?” Jimin’s voice is full of concern, but Taehyung still doesn’t seem to get it, blinking up at Jimin innocently.

“We’re just worried about you.” Seokjin stoops lower so that he’s looking into Taehyung’s eyes, and despite his tiredness, he’s still wearing a smile, his voice soft and unwavering. He brushes Taehyung’s fringe aside, smoothing it over his hair. “We don’t want you to get lost, TaeTae, so just stick with us and tell us where you want to go, so we could all go together, okay?”

Taehyung nods. “I’m sorry.” He tells Seokjin. He looks beside Seokjin, where Jimin is standing, still looking worried. “I’m sorry too, Jimin-hyung. But you don’t need to worry, I’m okay!” Taehyung’s smile is wide and box-shaped, and Jimin sighs, because he knows he can’t do anything much about it, especially when both Seokjin and Taehyung are smiling so adorably like that.

“Do you want some ddeokbokki?” Jimin asks, his voice more gentle this time. Taehyung’s squeal of delight makes Jimin smile in reflex, as if seeing Taehyung glad has conditioned his system to feel better. Jimin has never met a ten-year old like Taehyung, and he wonders whether that’s a good thing or not.

“Jimin, you should eat some, too. This one tastes really good,” Seokjin offers a piece of ddeokbokki to Jimin, and he opens his mouth in compliance, knowing that Seokjin would end up pouting if Jimin doesn’t let him feed him.

“Well it does taste good,” Jimin thinks, chewing on it thoughtfully, and then Taehyung giggles, loud enough for the other passersby to hear. Jimin hears a few remarks about how Taehyung is such a cute child and the like, and he couldn’t help the smile blossoming on his lips, feeling a lot like a proud older brother more than anything.

“Why’re you laughing?” Seokjin asks, popping a piece ddeokbokki into his mouth.

“You hyungs are just too cute to watch,” Taehyung replies, still giggly. There’s ddeokbokki sauce on his hands and all over his mouth, but he doesn’t seem to notice this. “I wish I could have something like that when I’m older.”

Jimin chokes on the food he’s chewing, tears forming in his eyes as he feels the ddeokbokki clog up in his throat and Seokjin reacts quickly by offering him a cup of water. He accepts it quickly, thanking Seokjin after he’s downed the liquid and felt that he could breathe again.

“See, that’s what I mean,” Taehyung giggles even harder this time, his fingers curling. “So cute.”

“Ah, Tae, there’s sauce on your face. Come here, let me clean that.” Jimin says to change the topic of the conversation, reaching out and wiping the sauce on Taehyung’s face with a clean table napkin. He’s blushing furiously, cheeks and ears reddening in embarrassment and Seokjin smiles to himself, finding it adorable how Jimin tries to cover up his shyness by doing something else even when his face has practically turned red.

=======

“Ha! Beat that!” Taehyung screams, doing a victory dance in his seat. It’s quite obvious that he likes rubbing his win in front of Jimin’s face, what with all the actions he’s doing. Seokjin laughs, patting Jimin on the back and reminding him that it’s just a game.

Jimin frowns. It’s the first time he got beaten in Tekken 6, always knowing it in himself that he’s one of the best players in their area even though nobody really acknowledges the rankings. It’s annoying, especially because he got beaten by a ten-year old who only knows spam moves, and it’s even more annoying because it’s the first time Seokjin has watched him play, and he only ended up losing.

He knows he’s just being immature and selfish now, but he just couldn’t help himself. He’s grateful though that nobody notices, because Taehyung looks so excited that Seokjin had been smiling a lot more today, and he didn’t want to ruin the atmosphere just because of his own greed to be alone with Seokjin.

It has been Jimin’s idea in the first place, and he knows that he shouldn’t blame Seokjin for anything. It’s his older brother and sister-in-law that had an emergency meeting on the other town on such a short notice right on the day the usual babysitter that they hire to watch over Taehyung is out on a fieldtrip and obviously, Seokjin didn’t have much of a say on the situation, not wanting to leave his nephew uncared for, but Jimin just so badly wanted their date to happen already that he hadn’t realized what the repercussions of his decision could be.

“Let’s go to the noraebang instead, hyung! Seokjin-hyung’s been telling me that you have a really nice voice!” Taehyung says, interrupting Jimin’s thoughts, and specks of red dot his cheeks. He sneaks a glance at Seokjin, but Seokjin avoids his gaze, pretending to be intently looking at the screen of the broken CapCom machine beside them.

He decides that Taehyung isn’t really that annoying, but maybe he’s just really had his arcade gamer’s pride hurt badly from being defeated that he’s let his judgment get clouded up. Taehyung is actually a nice kid, adorable even, and maybe he’s just really badly wanted for things to go his way today so that he and Seokjin could have an okay first date, but he realized that what made their date today special was having Taehyung with them.

======

Seokjin finds the way Taehyung falls asleep with his head pressed up against Jimin’s arm endearing, especially when Jimin begins to pat Taehyung’s head lightly, humming a tune under his breath. It’s familiar to Seokjin’s ears, and he remembers that time when he first met Jimin, singing a song to himself as he looks out the window of their dorm’s common hall, splattered with rain. It wasn’t exactly love at first sight, but it was something. He looks outside the bus’s window and smiles, looking up at the stars dotting Seoul’s night sky.

He had been so worried that the two wouldn’t get along from the start, not wanting to ditch Jimin to take care of his nephew but at the same time not wanting to leave Taehyung to fend for himself. It was a great thing though that Jimin understood everything and even suggested to let Taehyung come with them so he could also join in the fun, and Taehyung listened dearly to what he and Jimin told him, restraining himself from his tendency to run off to an entirely different place so they wouldn’t go about worrying.

When the bus stops, Jimin doesn’t wake Taehyung up, putting the kid on his back with utmost care so that Taehyung’s sleep wouldn’t be disturbed. “Let’s go hyung, our stop’s here.” When Jimin glances at Seokjin, the latter is amazed at how he still seems to be energized despite a long day out. He’s about to say something, but then he realizes that the bus driver is still waiting for them to get down, so he scrambles up from his seat, not wanting to piss off the bus driver by delaying their descent any further.

“Jimin, you don’t need to do that. Here, let me,” Seokjin offers when they finally get off their stop, holding his hand out so that he can carry Taehyung instead.

Jimin laughs quietly so that he wouldn’t wake Taehyung up, but the unmistakable quake of his shoulders has Seokjin thinking what’s so funny about the entire situation. “You can’t possibly carry him, hyung. Your old man muscles aren’t enough for this kid.”

“I’m hurt.” Seokjin says, clutching his chest as if it was really painful. But then he laughs along with Jimin, because he knows that the younger is just teasing him. He takes the plastic bags Jimin’s holding instead, telling Jimin that it’s more practical this way so that the younger couldn’t protest any longer.

He leads them to his apartment only a few blocks away, with Taehyung still riding piggy back behind Jimin, because he knows that once Jimin’s made up his mind about something, it’s hard to tell him otherwise. Besides, it’s kind of cute, how Jimin takes care of Taehyung as if he was his own little brother. Seokjin has always known that Jimin was nice and a gentleman and he is aware that Jimin has dealt with kids before, but he didn’t know that Jimin and Taehyung would get along really well.

When they get to the Seokjin’s apartment, Seokjin immediately heads to the kitchen to put down the bags before heading off to the spare bedroom, unlocking the door and letting the two inside. Jimin puts Taehyung down on the bed and takes off his shoes and socks before pulling the sheets over him, smoothing the creases out with his hands. Seokjin knows that he’s supposed to be the one who’s tucking Taehyung to sleep, but he just lets Jimin do it, seeing how attached Jimin has grown to the kid.

When Jimin kisses the top of Taehyung’s head and pats his forehead before whispering a goodnight, he realizes that he’s actually grown fond of the kid, and even when he’d first wanted it to be just him and Seokjin on their first date, he doesn’t regret letting Taehyung tag along.

Seokjin holds the door open for Jimin, and when the younger gets out of the room, he glances back at his nephew sleeping peacefully. He smiles fondly at the kid, even when he knows nobody can see it. “Thank you,” he whispers into the darkness before closing the door behind him. He knows he would have had a lot of fun with Jimin alone, but Taehyung had made the day even more enjoyable, even though they had a hard time keeping up with the kid’s energy.

“Do you want any drinks?” Seokjin asks when he’s closed the door. It’s not that late yet, so he wants to spend more time with Jimin. Besides, after all those running and playing around for the whole day, he wants to just sit down and chat with Jimin, like how first dates really usually go.

“Nah, it’s okay, hyung. No need to bother.” Jimin replies, adjusting his beanie. “It’s late, you should take a rest.”

Seokjin tsks at him, reaching out to put his fringe away from his eyes. “You’re a guest. Now what do you want, iced tea? Lemonade? Or orange juice?”

“Typical Seokjin-hyung,” Jimin thinks, grinning. “Iced tea would be nice.”

Seokjin leads him into the kitchen, taking out a pitcher filled with cold water from the fridge and a spoon from a small drawer where all his cutleries are organized. He puts both down on the counter by the sink, opening the cabinet overhead to look for a pack of powdered tea and some sugar.

Jimin takes a seat on the dining table behind him, observing his hyung. There’s a domestic feeling to this setup, and Jimin feels his heart flutter at the prospect, strangely feeling shy for a moment. He’s known Seokjin for quite some time, having had met the older guy when they were still both residing in the university dorms, but they haven’t been dating for that long, Jimin only belatedly realizing his growing feelings for Seokjin. He had always brushed his feelings aside for friendship, but then things had started happening, and then Seokjin had asked him to be his prom date, and then everything started escalating from there.

Jimin belatedly remembers buying boxes of Pepero from one of the stalls they’ve been to, and he brings one out from one of the plastic bags on the table. “Oh yeah, hyung, do you want some Pepero?” he asks Seokjin, opening one box. He tears the plastic open and takes one out, giving it a small bite.

“Oh, you bought some?” Seokjin asks, glancing back at Jimin momentarily while he’s stirring the drink.

“Yeah, I bought three, all chocolate-flavored.” He says, taking another bite. “I thought Taehyung would want some, but I forgot to give it to him before he fell asleep.”

“I can give it to him for you tomorrow. I bet he’ll get excited at the mere mention of anything related to chocolate.”

Jimin puts a Pepero stick into his mouth to take another one from the box and offer it to Seokjin. “Here hyung, try some.” He says around the Pepero stick, starting to chew on it.

“Okay,” Seokjin stops stirring and taps the spoon on top of the pitcher’s edge, putting it down on the countertop. He wipes his hands along the sides of his jeans as he turns around and walks towards Jimin. But instead of simply taking the Pepero stick in Jimin’s hand, he inches his face closer and bites off the one in Jimin’s mouth, their lips meeting briefly. Jimin remembers the feeling of soft lips meeting his still lingering despite the time of contact being short.

“Thanks,” Seokjin coughs, chewing on the treat. “Although I must say, I like the strawberry flavor better.” He’s trying to act so cool that it’s killing Jimin, seeing how he’s blushing furiously. Jimin notices and takes note of this, of course, and Seokjin turns away to hide his face when he sees Jimin staring at him with a dumbstruck expression on his face.

Jimin stands up and tugs at the hem of Seokjin’s shirt, feeling his face redden at the thought of what just happened. “Hyung, stop doing that and give me a proper kiss.”

At the back of Jimin’s mind, he hopes that Taehyung doesn’t wake up and walk in on them, because the look in Seokjin’s eyes when he turns to look back at him tells him that Seokjin might give him more than just an innocent kiss.
