So, I finally watched this movie when I totally had no such time, but I had lots of laundry to fold, so I multi-taksed hahahaha~I knew its premise was very similar to the Japanese Battle Royale series

You have not read the books, have you? There's a lot more background into how and why the games came about and how and why it isn't actively fought against. It's not tolerated other than in the Capital and maybe in Districts 1 and 2 who see winning the games as an honour. (And if you think that the Capital tolerating it is strange, is it really that different to the West turning a blind eye to some of the atrocities happening in Africa and the Middle East and turning away asylum seekers trying to escape it

Meh, you'll have to excuse me. I did a semester or two at university about leadership and politics and how the general public can be manipulated. It was fascinating. If you take down the internet and other free, easy to access and widespread ways of communicating it isn't impossible to believe. You have to factor that in. Stop freedom of information and cut people off so that all they hear is what you want them to hear. Slowly dehumanise the people you're targeting (look at how certain politicians target the poor and have other people believing their nonsense for a low level example). People would fight against what they saw in their streets, and they would be killed. Eventually, people would stop fighting just to survive.
Ah, I guess I didn't explain myself well enough. No, it's not the oppressed that I think is unrealistic. They are. THEY can happened and have happened many times in our history. What I can't believe are the people of the ruling class that find it entertaining to watch kids murder each other in the movie.
No, I haven't read the book, my impressions are purely based on the movie alone.
The ruling class is very small though. The average person in the Capital (the ones that find it entertaining) are as much in the dark about things as the people in the Districts are. They don't understand what life is like in the Districts. They're being as manipulated as the people in the Districts are, they're just in a glided cage and are completely clueless to the nature of the society they live in. I don't think they truly understand how horrific the Hunger Games is either as that kinda creeps in a little more in the second film/book
The true ruling class is very small - the government, the game makers... They're doing it to keep the Districts under control and save their own skins because they know an uprising could destroy them.
I believe in the fundamental goodness in people as a whole. still, human beings have a strong attachment to violence, cruelty and whatever...
I believe in the majority of humans having conscience. sure, but human mind is really weak and it can snap if something shocking/bad occurs... and not every time this sudden change points to the good in us...
I believe that most people would not tolerate such cruelty as 'entertainment', not now, not ever. I dunno if this will happen again even if it's likely since human history tends ti repeat itself as in a circle but lots of cruel things happened in the dark ages (most were considered entertaining by the "leading class") and people had to bow and obey them in order not to get killed ^^
[my shoulder is starting to hurt, so I have to end this comment soon] said that, since history is a circle, that event would be only a "pillow era" between 2 societies ^^
this is only my opinion, if I misread something or offended you, point it out ^^
p.s. And I have a problem when people say things like
( ... )
I read it and I agree with you! Still there are/were/will be people like that... it's hard to find them in a large group all together though lol
whops XD
thanks <3 nothing lol since here I don't have a desk, I was on the bed writing with one hand while the other arm was keeping me straight in a bad angle :'D
I feel the same, though I haven't watched the movie. I find the whole concept so disturbing that I am afraid to watch and even more disturbed when people say it seems like a possible future reality to them. So many horrid things have happened, but I don't really see a future where an entire society can view the murders of children as entertainment without the slightest issue.
The way I see it, if there was a society close to what is pictured, they would be more likely to make slaves of the children (as awful as that would be) than risk just having them killed. That would appear to have more value than the entertainment. Also, as you said, many would run off and choose to carve out some sort of life in the woods or such. There would be too much backlash, too many riots, uprisings, and such for child murder to simply be accepted.
When they show people cheering and having a grand old time watching kids on stage being interviewed (before the battles actually start) when they know most of these kids are walking into their certain deaths, I just cannot see any humanness in them, you know? Like, they're of a completely different species. Could that be us? As a society as a whole? NO.
But yeah, both The Hunger Game and Battle Royale are based on such premise. If you watch it as a complete fantasy (which I did), then you'd probably be OK... X'D
I was gonna say something along the lines of "are you sure people aren't talking about a dystopic society?" But then saw your addition to this post when I got home, so never mind xD LOL
Hahahaha. You know I don't have a problem with the movie itself, right? I did enjoy it. I just find it difficult to accept when people think that seeing children kill each other for entertainment could actually be in our future, that's all.
I know you enjoyed it and I'm glad. You should read the books! They are excellent and a fast read too! I finished all 3 books within a couple of days XD
I think a dystopic society could very well happen. In what form it takes, that I'm not quite sure XD. As sad as this is to say, I wouldn't be surprised in whatever form it takes either.
Well, I have 4 books waiting for me to even touch them, so maybe in my distant future... lol
Sure, dystopian societies can and will happen. They exist even now. I never deny that. But with the general public enjoying watching innocent kids killing each other? I don't believe that, so I guess we're different there.
Ancient Roman society: Gladiators; a major entertainment staple - among other things. The Kids aspect however, that just seams really un-interesting and a waste of potential able-bodied citizens. It definitely would had been seen as such going back in time, no matter what area of the world one resided in.
Anyway, I never had any interest in 'Hunger Games' - it just seams really stupid to me. It's a whole series of books; so a few more movies shall be coming out of this series. Meh. Twilight is more interesting - and I can't stand idiotic teenage drama (couldn't stand it when I was a teen, sure as hell can't stand it now, but at least there may be a couple of redeeming aspects of this series - vampires and warewolves).
By the way, (back to the hunger games)what are the people supposed to stay obedient to?
Yes, exactly! People did use fight-to-the-death battles for mass entertainment in our history, but never with children. It really is a waste of future manpower lol, but I do think that people are genetically programmed to protect their offspring, unless they are psychopaths.
Yeah, they already made a second movie, didn't they? I'll probably watch it, though. I did enjoy the movie itself. lol I don't think I'll ever watch Twilight, pretty sure I couldn't stand all the teenage hormones infused in that movie. lol But Vampires and Werewolves, HECK YEAH!!! \0/ lol
Well, in the Hunger Games, people of the Districts are under the control of the Capital (specifically it's government and military), and they are by force unable to leave their districts and forced to live in poverty while serving/laboring for the people in the Capital and whatnot. I haven't read the books (and I don't think I will in the future), so I'm not sure about the details of the backdrop.

I've explained myself a little better in the edit, so please read it if you have time.
But yeah, if you haven't seen the movie, maybe it's hard to understand what I'm trying to point out, though... XD
*rubs your shoulder*
What's wrong with your shoulder? *A*;;
