Earth Hour 2009

As I prepare for Earth Hour 2009, turning off lights and (about to begin) shutting off my laptop, I can hear the roar of the Grand Prix cars in the distance.

Does anyone else find it ironic that the Grand Prix will be on during Earth Hour? Apparently not the channel 7 news - they had the GP coming up right after Earth Hour in their news bulletin.*

I actually think F1 is a good thing - a lot of money poured into increasing fuel efficiency, which will be passed on to consumer cars, and this season the cars will be running using KERS.

While it is good that they are putting money into more sustainability for cars, it aggravates me that the only way people are willing to fund it is to improve efficiency in sport, rather than as good for the environment. Amusement applications lead to practical ones it seems, rather that developing sustainable cars for sustainability's sake.

Imagine how medicine would be if we followed the same idea (i.e.: medicine only developed to help athletes or famous people). I'd have died years ago!
