When Windows was my main OS I used to use Cygwin.. and I used to set it as the default shell in this application (I've always liked the thought of a terminal that looks like that).There's also uwin from AT&T research. Microsoft also has tools available as well. If you are interested in just the tools for use in the cmd shell you can try this.
thanks, cygwin was recommended a few times so will check that out. The list you gave me should keep me slightly busy for a little while researching everything and deciding what to try! :)
