Could someone who is more informed that I am PLEASE explain this "clean coal" thing?
I've seen several tacky advertisements on t.v. about some magical new supposedly-clean way to use coal as a "major source of the nation's energy."

Yesterday, President Shrub was on CNN (?) giving a press conference about his "energy plan." One of the little gems ( Read more... )

Oh this is very simple. You see the clean part refers to the clean proffit the pres intends to make for himself and his buddies ;-)

I have to agree with E's observation. Coal is filthy, filthy stuff. My grandfather was a coalminer and after seeing him come home from the mines and the toll blacklung took on him, I cannot conceive of a way to make coal a viable option in today's society, much less a *clean* option. Even before it's burned it leaves filth anywhere it's carried or stored.

So, no big suprise, then? exhuman June 26 2005, 19:08:21 UTC
I had figured as much, Minx. I've never heard of a safe way to get coal, a safe way to burn it, or any other thing that might make it look like a good idea.

I hope that the Bush Administration's plan to use this mythical "clean coal option" is defeated. No matter how many CNN things I see, they never explain HOW they're going to make it clean. (And come on, 250 years? what will they do after it's all used up? Shortsighted, stupid people.)

Lady_E, you're probably right. One would just expect them to at least put on a show of making it clean in some other way. When they were leasing off federal parkland to the TIMBER industry, they pretended that it would somehow be good for the environment (how that could be, i just don't know). They usually try to look less obviously greedy.
