im looking into getting one of these infernal contraptions.
the current one that is the most appealing is Toshibas Gigabeat. it seems like a fine player.
also, microsofts zune and creative's zen:m is looking quite good. but i think the toshiba winz

The Zune player is based on the Toshiba Gigabeat S series players!
Plus it has Wifi.

anyway, you can argue 'trendiness' all you want - bottom line is that the iPod is smartly designed and incredibly easy. That's why it's popular (plus the ad campaigns for it kick ass, gots to give credit where its due)
Granted, I own an iPod (an older model, pre-color screen era and still love it) and haven't tested any direct compeditor models myself, but I don't need to. Usability is outstanding and simple. You just plug it in, transfer songs through iTunes, either by auto syncing or drag/drop, eject and you're golden. That and I've been pretty happy with Apple.
Don't get me wrong - shopping around isn't a bad thing. Just don't throw the idea of getting an iPod out just because it's "trendy."
