I'm interested in Exeter because I want a challenging education and I want to become independent. In 8th grade I got all A's. Going to Exeter was one of the best decisions I made in my life. I love that place, although it helps if you're kind of a type-A personality and like following rules. The only downside is that Exeter was so great it made my first college experience rather a disappointment.

As far as college admissions goes, yes, challenging courses you get low grades in do ding your record. However, colleges know that Exeter isn't just the high school down the street when it comes to workload and level of maturity required, so as long as you do reasonably well, not having a 4.0 isn't going to keep you out of a good college.
(That said: public schools can be awesome academically and socially, so unless your particular school district is in some trouble, don't think you can't do great things there.)
