I don't know about "finding out about life in Tokyo", but the Tokyo Gaijins group runs a lot of activities, if you want to do hiking and partying and sports. (I used to play volleyball with them, but never went to any of the other things.)
I studied at Sendagaya Japanese Institute for a while (no idea if you mean Japanese classes or not) and I had a good experience there, although I was taking JLPT N2 prep classes and then failed the N2, mostly because I didn't do enough homework.
It'll really depend on where in the city you are for what classes/groups/etc you want to join, honestly -- like, playing vball with TG was great and all, but they mostly met in Tamachi and other places in the southeast part of the city and I lived in Kita-ku so it was like an hour to get there/back, whereas Intervoll met in Shinjuku and was like 15 mins to get there but they only met sporadically. Same for why I went to SJI, it was pretty near where I lived. But others will probably disagree with me on this one.
