Time Period: Season Two Episode 21

Personality: Schneizel’s personality can be described as double sided. One side is the side which he shows great concern for others and has an almost lovingly brotherly tenderness towards his subordinates. The other however is called his “mask” used for deception and manipulation. In most instances Schneizel’s mask is constructed perfectly never allowing others to see or alluding to what he truly has planned beneath it. He is stoic in most cases seemingly knowing or pretending to know what the enemy has planned in advanced. In most instances you’ll never get an unexpected or nervous response from the man at all; he’s pretty much constructed the ultimate poker face. There is only two times where Schneizel actually falters in his stoic expression: the first instance being with Euphemia massacring the Japanese and when his FELIJA warhead was successfully disarmed and destroyed. Both instances were unforeseen and entirely out of his control.
Schneizel shows a great care and affection towards his family members and yet he has no qualms or regrets it seems about killing them should they stand in his way. This is in fact, false, because when he attacks and shoots Cornelia she is hardly wounded, suggesting perhaps fake ammunition or non-lethal was used, therefore his actions only add onto his complex personality. It should also be noted that Schneizel, along with what seemed to be a general consensus with other members of the royal family, found what happened to Lelouch and Nunnally to be horrifying if not distasteful and therefore has a disliking towards Japan as a whole. He doesn’t however have ill regards when it comes to Lelouch, actually Schneizel rather fears and admires the young man. His royal stature somewhat clouds him to the oppressed and impoverished people of the world around him; he does not notice, nor does he seem to recognize, their struggles or inner personal hardships thus blinding him to what people fight for, human nature in general, and want it is that people truly want. This flaw in his character is what ends up making him lose to Lelouch in the end. Schneizel is cold and calculating when on the battlefield; though he seems to take pity on the lesser powerful country he fights against knowing full well that he is at an advantage. He usually gives armistice to these countries even though militarily he dominates them in every aspect.
In terms of his subordinates and workers Schneizel is quite lenient, such as Lloyd’s research as an example because building giant robots is probably really pricey. He is also attracted to odd character types, such as Earl Lloyd Asplund and Kanon Maldini; he has also helped Suzaku Kururugi in the past when the boy was charged with insubordination due to letting Zero go; he dismisses the charge completely saving Suzaku’s life. Schneizel, as stated by his sister Cornelia in the later episodes of the series, lacks a will and desire therefore he simply is. She goes onto stating that in more peaceful times Schneizel would have made an excellent king.
Schneizel wants for things to remain in the present because he himself does not know what the future holds. It is perhaps safe to assume that because he cannot formulate a possible outcome he is somewhat fearful of the future, or he merely sees it as bringing more harm and may even be more horrible than the present. Due to this thought process the world where he will rule will remain stagnant and unchanging and thus uncorrupted. His lack of will and desire goes so far that he is willing to become a God for the people in order to create a peaceful society stating all that he wants is what the people want which is nothing other than peace. However he plans to this by ruling with none other than fear rather than trying to offer his people a choice. You could say that his actions are unilateral. His disdain for the past is mainly due to his father’s own personal agendas and his father’s foolish use of Geass. He does not believe in Geass, as Clovis had an interest and knowledge in the study of it same with Charles; he finds such supernatural things to be but child’s play and things only seen in fairy tales. But he is witnessed partaking in the excavation of the Thought Elevator on The Island of the Gods.
Schneizel is world class manipulator plain and simple. He only makes choices and moves when the outcome is to be beneficial and worthy to his cause. Expedient to the very core Schneizel only takes up people and plans that are suitable to a given purpose-specifically his ultimate plan of worldly power, which is why he shot Cornelia in the first place, and constructed the Fleija warheads. Basically he’s a straight up opportunist; he cares not about the lengths taken to reach the outcomes and merely sees himself as the central most important piece of his overall plan. This characteristic is the only reason why he allows Lelouch to go on for as long as he did. He allowed the other to take out Charles and go about his business up till the point where Lelouch becomes a worldly ruler. But in the end Schneizel basically destroys everything Lelouch strove towards and accomplished in a matter of minutes. With the world naturally against Lelouch; Schneizel worked this in his favor and he even manipulated Lelouch’s former colleagues, the Black Knights, to fight against him.
To top it all off Schneizel is adept at being an astounding gentleman and naturally a charmer. He uses these attributes to gain the affections of people such as Nina whom he used to forge his FLIEJA warheads and even the Black Knights he gains on his side through subtle substantial manipulation.
Strengths: While never really having shown much physical abilities in the show Schneizel is definitely embroiled in warfare. He knows how to fire a gun and possibly even use a sword. It’s also safe to assume that, while he never piloted one, Schneizel could have used a knightmare frame. But besides those assumptions he’s fairly normal in regards to strength.
Schneizel is a tactical genius. There hasn’t been a battle he hasn’t won, and there certainly isn’t anyone in the Code Geass universe that is on par with his level and skill of tactical, strategic planning. Besides Lelouch no one has ever given Schneizel much difficulty in a fight and even then Lelouch has lost to the other.
Nothing really gets this man riled up. He’s never seen showing much emotion and for his occupation that’s certainly a good thing. He does have small attachments to his brothers and sisters, such as at the news of Clovis’ and Euphemia’s death. But beyond that he’s typical emotionally hardened and never lets any situation get the better of him. He keeps a calm, cool head despite what direction the situation goes in; though most battles and situations usually go his way, or he simply formats them to fit to his general use.
Weaknesses: He’s a human being with no powers or special enhancements so he will bleed when cut, and he can die when shot or stabbed and that’s about it.
Another weakness that Schneizel has is the fact that he is so emotionally detached to the people around him that he has no real sense of what it is people truly want. He also has probably zero interest in their overall goals and desires but he can certainly pretend that he cares. He aims towards obtaining world peace, but it would be at the cost of having people move forward and instead be tied down unable to change. Whereas Lelouch has the benefit of seeing the poor and impoverished people of Area 11, Schneizel as nobility never truly had that. It’s basically beyond his scope of understanding if you will and it ends up costing him in the end.
He’s a pretty stagnant, unchanging character which makes him blind towards certain options and values which could be exploited. He doesn’t believe in the occult for one and that in and of itself lends to his demise; he’s also very much like a computer. He is a brilliant tactician and strategist yet there’s just nothing beyond that; he does things because the people, as he claims, need someone to fall back onto to give them what they need. However he himself never truly has much say in what they want or what he wants specifically, it’s more of a well if people want this I’ll certainly give it them just because I can.
