There was I, standing in the slowly-moving Christmas queue in our local post office and idly looking at the the fancy goods display and the cartoon mugs when my eye was caught by a sort of elongated egg cosy, knitted in red and with a white "fur" and plastic holly leaf trim. Have you never seen such a thing before? Call yourself a woman of the world! Guru sold them when I was a teenager.

I mentally file them as a thing people buy when they have no ideas at all for a gift. I blame Secret Santas.

It's a very odd post office in my recollection.

I'm sure that there is a market for the cold-afflicted gentleman. Knit away and... yes,um, well!

I seem to remember waylay telling me she was knitting one for damerell a while ago - but he was participating in a naked cycle-ride so it didn't seem unreasonable.

(Mind you, I suspect her pattern was a little more complicated because I believe the resulting garment was intended to cover, ah, the full works.)

They are a fairly regular seasonal novelty. Perhaps a craft stall next year in the run up to the festive season? Or would the gentlemen of the parish care to demonstrate such wares for a calendar? One feels the WI should be assembled for an industrial scale project....

Yes, I knew they existed but seeing them in the local Post Office was a bit of a surprise, and I'd never before bothered to wonder who, when and why. Secret Santas are to blame for scented candles in my experience, even in a mixed choir, although, if I drew the name of a particular tenor I might consider one. Rainbow colours? Now there's a thought.
