One of the units I'm taking this semester is about working in Aboriginal contexts. As I have been learning about past policies, the current problems, racism and modern prejudice against Indigenous Australians I have felt outraged, angry and sad. I just listened to Archie Roach's song "Native Born" and felt like bawling my eyes out. How can we have ( Read more... )

Yeah I understand. My brother in law was randomly beaten by a group of Aboriginals when he was walking down street minding his own business when he was younger.

the issue doesn't stop at Australia, or even begin there. Looking around, it becomes obvious that every nation has its "poor" people that are pretty much ostracized and treated (quite bluntly) like shit. From the Native Americans, to lower caste Indian peoples, the problem is simply we as a people are not happy unless we have someone beneath us so we feel better.
We as a human species are pretty dismal and pitiful.

If you would like to see where a lot of the current issues arise from, the best place to start looking is ATSIC and the assorted "Human Rights Advocate Groups" that worked with them.

When you take a bunch of public servants and pay them ridiculously high salaries to deal with the problems for aboriginal communities and urban aborigines, you get a bunch of fat-cats who dont want the problem fixed. (After all, if you fix the problems you are out of a job ( ... )

Hmmm thanks for that. As a social worker I may come up against such annoying agencies.

Luckily the rest of my course addresses the causes, if this unit turns out to be a bit thin in that area. However, we've already been talking about history, modern prejudice etc.
