Watermelon
Heroes (RP!verse) | Zach, Sendhil, Sara
PG13 | 951 words

“SARA! CATCH!” Zachary’s voice yelled behind her and she turned around, her arms flailing when she saw a watermelon careening towards her. “Ahhh!” she screamed, throwing her hands up and jumping out of the way just as the round object collided with a nearby display.

“SCORE!” the young man voiced, his arms flinging upwards as he spun around triumphantly. Giddy laughter filled the produce section of the grocery store as Sara dropped the popsicle she had been holding to the floor, her giggles melding with Zachary’s laughter. Sendhil stood behind the fruit stand, staring at the wreckage of broken watermelon before his eyes lifted up, seeing the one’s responsible amused by drunken giggle fits.

“We should probably go.” He said, his eyes continuously searching for signs of workers, fearing that trouble was just looming behind the aisles. Sara caught her breath, her body straightening up as she faced him, “but… but… we need watermelon…” she wheezed through short breaths.

Sendhil stared incredulously at the ground, his hand flailing towards it as he responded, “THERE’S NONE LEFT!” Zachary took a swig from the bottle he was holding, his eyes diverted towards Sara, as they both dropped their gazes to the floor. The off-white tile was covered in bits of red and green, watermelon shards scattered across the ground.

Zachary tried to hold it in, but he ended up bursting into laughter, causing Sara to break as well. “Omg… omg…” she cried, trying to catch her breath. Water welled up in her eyes, the intense amusement causing her look over at Zachary. He was laughing hard, his body doubled over as he coughed, his lungs straining for oxygen.

Sara took a deep breath, her foot kicking out to step towards Sendhil but she slipped, her body falling forward as her hands grasped at the air. Clutching fabric, she opened her eyes, her gaze pointed straight ahead as she saw a jean zipper. She bit her lip, raising her eyes up as she met Sendhil’s, his expression not exactly pleased. Sara smiled innocently, her hands clutching his jacket as she coyly responded, "Hi?"

“We’re leaving…” he said, grabbing her arm and pulling her up, “You two are acting like children.” She backed up once he had released her arm and Zachary’s voice was heard behind her, “Oh c’mon Sendhil, loosen up.” he said walking up to Sara as he grabbed her from behind, twirling her around in a circle.

Her feet hit the ground and she giggled, her hands placed on Zachary’s arms as she lifted her gaze to Sendhil, “Yeah Sendhil… join us,” she paused, giving him a playful raise of her eyebrow, “we have alcohol!”

“and braaaaaiiiiinnnnnsssss…” Zachary hissed in amusement, his chin slumping down on Sara’s shoulder as they began to burst into laughter. Sendhil sighed, his head tilting to the side, “As TEMPTING as that sounds, I’m going to have to pass…” he trailed off, seeing wide grins plastered on their faces. “Someone’s got to be the voice of reason around here.”

His gaze was fixated on the two giggling drunks when the lights went out, a shrill scream piercing through the darkness. Sporadic lighting filled the store as the emergency lights turned on and Zachary's body jerked, his nerves startled. Sara had jumped up into his arms when the lights went off, her shoulders shrugging as he looked at her dumbfounded. His shoulders shrugged as well, both of their eyes lifted upwards towards the ceiling as they blinked at the lights.

Sara dropped her gaze, her eyes drawn to the still body of a produce worker. Pulling away from Zachary’s hold, she unstably walked around the stand, noticing the distinctive absence of the man’s brain.

She turned around, her brow furrowed as she stared at him in drunken dismay, “Did you kill someone again, Zachary?!?” His dark eyes grew wide and he blurted out hastily, “I DIDN’T MEAN IT!”

Sendhil sighed, throwing a hand up towards his forehead as he rubbed his temple in annoyance. He glanced at the two before walking to the front of the store, the both of them following him like two lost puppies. Walking up towards the door, he found metal replacing the large opening.

Slamming his open palm against the locked entrance, he seethed in frustration, “Great!” he turned his body around, his back placed flat against the metal, “We’re locked in.” Sara looked at the blockade, her blue-green eyes drifting to notice the shut windows before resting her eyes on Zachary. He was lost in concentration as well, his dark eyes blinking at the metal door.

Zachary dropped his gaze, finding Sara’s eyes straight on him as they stood in silence, the tension breaking apart as they both broke out into laughter.

“Really???” the young man asked, his eyes squinted due to his amused outburst. Sendhil looked at Zachary, his tone and expression classified under the description of ‘not amused’, as Sara yelled out. “OH MY GOD!! THEY HAD A SLIP N’ SLIDE IN THE KIDS AISLE!”

Sendhil looked in Sara’s direction as he watched her dart off, her body running towards the back of the store. Zachary looked back at Sendhil before rushing off after her, his laughter dying down as he tried to catch his breath.

Taking a deep sigh, Sendhil slid down the metal blockade as he sat down on the ground. He reached over to his left, his hand grasping around the neck of a bottle as he brought it up. The sting of alcohol reached his lips as he began chugging down the contents of the vodka bottle.

He pulled himself up, his body staggering from the speed in which he got up as he followed after the two. He mumbled as he walked through the aisles, “If you can’t beat them, might as well join them.”
