Inevitable
Twilight | Edward/Bella, Jacob
PG13 | 464 words
He was cold as ice, his marble skin sending chills through my body as he placed his cool lips against my forehead.
I opened my eyes and he was gone. The faint but undeniable scent of him wafting through the moist air as I locked my gaze from tree to tree, trying to locate the god-like statue. Then I heard it, the snarl that drifted in the silence, the last of its noise dissipating as a low growl followed shortly after, the tone all wrong.
I threw myself forward, running between tree trunks and bushes, almost tripping over a protruding root that extended from the wet soil as I tried to reach the location of the disturbance.
He was standing a few feet away, in a clearing overrun by moss and ferns, his body rigid. “Edward?” I asked hesitantly, my foot stepping forward until his head snapped towards mine and he drew an arm up to halt my movement.
“Don’t move Bella.” He said; his eyes a blazing topaz which only grew darker as his black pupils enlarged and he returned his gaze to the trees. It wasn’t until I had followed in the direction of his gaze, that I noticed Jacob.
He was standing against a large tree trunk; his shoulder slumped against the bark and his eyes never left Edward’s face. It was clear that he was trying to stay calm; knowing full well what would happen if he lost control.
Edward’s voice was steely, “You’re on the wrong land,” a smile twitched on his lips but his eyes remained hard, “What would the other’s think about you breaking the treaty?”
“Screw the treaty.” He snarled, stepping away from the overgrown trees as he advanced towards Edward. A warning growl echoed from Edward’s perfect lips as he kept his rigid stance, his eyes flashing momentarily before Jacob exploded into a mess of russet coloured fur.
I gasped as I watched Jacob lunge, his sharp teeth bared savagely toward a mirrored set of bright white teeth. “NO!” I yelled as I watched Edward prowl forward, his muscles visibly tense as chaos began to ensue.
There was a loud screech, a blinding light and a cascade of rain before I jerked awake screaming. Edward was there with his cool arms wrapped around my waist, pulling me towards him as I laid my cheek against his chest and let my nerves relax.
“It’s all right Bella” he soothed, planting a light kiss to my dark hair, “everything’s fine.”
I closed my eyes, trying to calm my rapidly beating heart from the combined torment of his touch and the frantic events of my dream. I knew everything wasn’t going to be alright. Someday, the treaty would be broken.
And one of them would have to die.
