That is almost to say that we are more defined by our anguish then our pleasure. At the root, we are all very similar in what we want, yet very different in what we've had to deal with to get it. This almost reminds me of the nature vs nurture debate. Nature here being our innate desire for pleasure and freedom, and nurture being the adversities that life throws at us.

I think we are more defined by are anguish, because of how unique they seem. Once you begin to realize that all those dark and secrete fears and pains are in everyone in some form, it becomes easier to lift out eyes and relate to others.

Anyone with empathy may be more inclined to share the good things with others thus realizing the similarities but keep the negatives to themselves, and never learning of any overlaps.
