Why are piercings for?

Well, ok, I can understand if someone wears an earing on the ear, brow or nose for aesthetic purposes, but why the fuck do some people (look at bmezine) pierce the hell out of their faces and bodies? Is it something spiritual for them? I guess, it initially was so. But where's the bloody spirit in an attention seeking sad person? Is it all about

I don't think piercings are about vanity. You dont look prettier if you have piercings. I cant speak for all the people who have piercings but mine didn't come from lack of attention or whatever. Oh and yeah I agree stretched ears are awful.

You don't look prettier, but you look "cool", and you're that dude or dudette with the metal face.

I sure don't believe that all those with excessively pierced faced are what I described, but I believe most of them do it out of trend.

my stance on the whole issue is: unless you can actually prove that you do all that for aesthetic or religious purposes, you suck. By proving i don't really mean hard evidence, but "i like it aesthetically" has become a very very trendy answer, and there's no way it's always true.
