So yeah, not that anyone noticed I didn't post anything sunday night(2 sundays ago) on my usual last shift of work.. but I never did make it to work sunday afternoon.
My team leader calls me up, I'm 10 minutes away from work, and tells me I need to go to the armory immediately... I'm like, huh!??! What's going on? As he continues to tell me that the state of Massachusetts has declared a state of emergency... So, I'm like, OKAY?!
I proceed to find my way onto the opposite side of the highway going about 90 in the pouring rain weaving in and out of traffic to get home to get my fatigues... Upon arrival, grabbed a few things to take with me in case we'd be there a while... Sadly, I didn't pack enough, but that's alright!!!
I get to the armory only to hear that the city of Peabody was having some flooding issues, and I was thinking nothing of it... but then come to find out, Peabody square accumulated about 2 feet of water in the center of town!!! I was shocked!!! So, we gear up and get on out there humvees'n all. Within the first 10 minutes of being there, I was on the news! :D
One of my friends(a Staff Sergeant) and I hopped right on out into work! I was about knee-high in water as was he, when we coaxed a 60 year old out of his car(and out of the water!) to our arms and carried him to the back of the soft-top humvee. We placed him onto the back of the vehicle, and got him out... sadly for him he must have sustained a good amount of water damage to his car's interior, but at least he was alright.
As night daylight's glow soon diminished, we were blocking off roads, and kicking people off of streets, and providing the extra assistance to the police as needed. Finally, around 12:30 we headed on back to Reading to the armory to rack out.
About 6 hours later(when I finally got to sleep it was a little bite later) we were up and at it again. We went to the fire station to assist the department with calls for morons stuck in the water. I call the morons because at this point the damn place was so clearly blocked off that you were stupid if you got stuck!!! People just insisted on trying ALL WEEK LONG!
So, moving on... I was there till Friday afternoon before they finally sent us home for the night... but of course the next day we had to return.
The other AWESOME stuff that occured...
I was awarded for my heroism by getting to take a ride in a Black Hawk with General Mason(the general of the National Guard! :D :D :D ) which was SO AWESOME!!!! I was awarded a coin from the Sergeant Major of the MANG which is a tradition in the NG. The following day, I was awarded the awards for the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts which I also had attended some time back. I received the Army Achievement Awards, and the Humanitarian Service Ribbon(which hasn't been awarded to anyone since the blizzard of 78), as well as my promotion to Private First Class. :D :D :D
I had quite the exciting week! Despite how tiring it was!!!
I need to get a copy of that tape!!! I want to have that wonderful memory of course, so I can show my son the things I did etc etc...
That is all for now!
The Baby Shower is this Sunday! :D :D :D Damien is almost here! :D
G'night!
