Not too "Intelligent" in Kansas...

Kansas, where the state Board of Education on Tuesday approved science standards for public schools that cast doubt on the theory of evolution. The 6-4 vote was a victory for intelligent design advocates who helped draft the standards. The standards cast doubt on Darwinism and redefine the word "science" so that it's not limited to the search for ( Read more... )

I know! We'll abolish all science altogether and just start handing out Bibles! odclay November 9 2005, 10:28:22 UTC
I really don't care about the origin of life, the universe, and everything (although I do know the Ultimate Answer...), so I really couldn't care about whether or not evolution is taught as a "science" or a "theory." But intelligent design? Hell no. Saying "We don't know the answer," pointing up, and saying "God did it" is giving up. It's giving up. Besides, the Church did that for what, 1500 years? How well did that work for them? Galileo, anyone?

Instead of working on my novel for NaNoWriMo, I wrote a really crappy post about the Kansas thing, if you care to read a crappy rant. It basically says what I just said here, only it's a bit crappier.

It seems we may agree on the bad moves of the overzealous religious crazies whose real aim is to discredit and diminish the importance of science and replace it with their religious beliefs. Science with its logical methods for explaining phemomena threatens their power over people.

I have come to the conclusion that religions of all sorts are guilty of manipulation and exploitation of human weaknesses and fears. Look at any of them and see how this exploitation benefits their bottom line.

Of course. That's because the central tenant of most organized religions--Christianity especially--is unwavering belief without question. That's why you're always hearing from the religious right that Christianity is under attack from yet another angle. Nobody's really attacking Christianity; they're just threatening its "Ask no questions" rule. Jesus said it best: "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe."
