In the last few months I've had some time to think through some things. I guess in some ways some of what I believe has softened, so to speak. For instance, I don't think it's entirely impossible that something resembling civilization could have been saved for quite a long time, given a lot of preparation and some really strict boundaries. More and more, I've been believing that the only way a just society will ever come about is through decisive action at the point of greatest upheaval, and that all we can do is to be prepared to act when it happens. And I've been coming to that conclusion through trains of thought much like yours, here (though you've spelled it out far better than I could have).

With regard to the transportation crisis: What most people forget is that there's already a practical and proven alternative to oil and biofuel. Two of them, in fact. They're attached to the ends of your legs...
