I worship Jolson, he does something for me that Cantor and the rest just can't do. But I basically agree with you that the fullness of his magnetism doesn't quite come off on-screen. The fact that his corny, maudlin movies can still pull at the heart-strings says something, though.

totally. my feeing is that anyone who can make me bust out crying after something as awful as 'Sonny Boy' has to be somewhat brilliant.
