You, my love, are quite philosophical if I do say so myself!
I think that immigration, hard work and prosperity made this country... our father's fathers (and mothers) made this country great. It's just sad that the powers that be, as well as morons, have turned it into what it is now: filled with problems, crime and poverty. We are one of the most hated countries in the world, and that makes me really sad. I don't think Ford itself made our country great, but the construction of the automobile (thanks to Henry Ford) made it much more possible for people to see this country, to visit loved ones and to branch out. However if Henry Ford hadn't come around, someone else would have.
As far as what we are. Remember, we are creatures made in God's image... I think we're real, we're people, and we're capable of so much. Life is one big learning experience and adventure, and for what it's worth, it sure is fun! Yeah, it does suck sometimes but you can't have good all the time... it would get boring if you always got your way :)
I suppose I will concede that we are made in God's image. I guess I'm thinking of "us" as more of a society. As in, did our society make America, or did specific people make America.
I agree with what you said about Henry Ford, but do you think that the automobile was such a shaping force in US history? Granted it allowed for all those things, but at the same time, people were able to travel and visit, etc. prior to the large scale adoption of the auto.
I don't know myself. I am of the opinion that anyone could have made America the way it is, and anyone can make it better. Noone seems to want to anymore. Did you know that Americans were given the right to bear arms in order to keep the government in check. The American people were given the responsibility to police the government if they need to, if it became too powerful, or too corrupt or in any way detrimental to the continued prosperity of the people.
People made America...Ford trucks just hauled stuff so people could be do-it-yourselfers again. Before that, I guess it was wagons. But people made this country and hopefully we continue to improve ourselves and our country.
And if we're gonna talk technology, then I'd have to say the printing press, the plow, the telegraph, cotton gin, etc did more to make America than the Ford F-series.
And that's about all the philosophy I can make coherent after work. :o)
I suppose I can't argue with that. I've been thinking more about my question, and I guess I have a thought. You may all agree or think it's complete bs.
I think the mixture of all the people made America. The "Melting Pot" of cultures, religions, ideas and beliefs.
What other country has so embraced all comers in such a fashion. And no, I don't think that we should have an open-border to anyone, but we should definately take a look at our history of acceptance and make some changes.
And by we, I mean he, and he=Bush (the douche he is. =)
Thanks for the welcome. I like having new LJ friends, and if you're even half as awesome as your wife says you are, then I'm sure I'll love having you as an LJ friend.
As far as knowing things... I'm very similar in that quest for knowledge. I want to know everything, but I don't want to settle for knowing why I can't know. I'm of the opinion that there's no reason why I shouldn't be able to know things! :) (why yes, yes I am a brat! haha) I've always wanted to be able to read & speak every language. That's been my biggest knowledge quest... I always thought things would come easy after accomplishing that. :)
