Grandma died last night.

And I'm sad, but not too sad. What's more devistating is that my brother and I never really knew her, or anyone else on my dad's side. We knew mom's side...we grew up with them. But as far as my dad's side goes, I met my grandmother maybe 4 times in my life. And out of 7 aunts and uncles who are all married with kids, I can name off of 1 of my dad' ( Read more... )

I'm sorry Buerke.

That's amazing to me that you have such a big family. But, really, I guess I'm kinda in your boat because I know nothing of my dad's side of the family at all. I think he was one of 7 maybe? But I've only met one of his family members...his brother that looks like a mini-him. So there are aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents I don't even know.

Isn't it strange how just because someone's blood doesn't mean they're family?

Yeah, that's what I keep thinking. That, and my last memory of grandma is that she introduced me and mom to her neighbor as "this is my daughter-in-law, Deanna, and this is her daughter." It wasn't even "this is my grandaughter" and I don't think she even remembered my name.

That was this past summer. We were visiting mom's side of the family (she's one of 9, most of them married, and many of them have kids. I can name off all my aunts and uncles and most of my cousins) and dad's mom and brother were a couple hours away. So while we spend a whole week visiting the Rapp side, we visit maybe an hour on the Buerke side.

I guess I just kind of feel robbed.
