The Thing Is by Ellen Bass

The Thing Is
to love life, to love it even
when you have no stomach for it
and everything you’ve held dear
crumbles like burnt paper in your hands,
your throat filled with the silt of it.
When grief sits with you, its tropical heat
thickening the air, heavy as water

I love you, lady. Sometimes I think to myself, and I want to post to you, "I miss you", but then I'm almost shocked to remember that, yeah, I've never even met you, so how can I miss you? It seems so strange that we've never met, and yet I care about you. And you care about me.

I hope you're doing okay. I hope the HSG wasn't too bad.

And wow, yeah, this is beautiful. Thank you for posting it.

It's my favorite thing about LJ. I have forged friendships here that are stronger and have lasted longer than the majority of ones IRL. And don't get me started on the honesty aspect. There are things in this journal that nobody IRL even know about. This place holds so much safety and comfort and you are an enormous part of that. <333

HSG wasn't bad at all, though we found out nothing new. I'm going to update soon.

LOVE YOU.

Awwww, I'm glad!! And yeah, I feel the same way. There are some things that I would rather go to LJ with so I can rant and vent and share with all my LJ friends because I know that you guys provide the kind of uncomplicated support that I need sometimes. And because of the internet distance, I can feel even more open to share certain things without the fear of being judged. I mean, gah, we've all found out more about each other than we probably share with our own mothers. Heh.
