My Name and Associates
The smartest thing I ever did was register myself as a consulting company. Any money I make at anything goes through that company, and damn near everything I buy qualifies as a tax write off. My rent is ‘office space’, computers, books, gas, meals with ‘associates’…. whatever. Also, many, many companies have ‘business discounts’ of 10-15% and the only requirement is that lovely business registration number. So all my friends are ‘associates’ who get to use the discounts, and in the eyes of Dell, many hotel chains and a few airlines, we’re actually a pretty big company providing them with a decent amount of business. Which means lots of free stuff like upgrades on plane tickets or hotel rooms, and when you complain they actually give a damn.
