“I don’t think you are who you say you are.” She told him one night over an impromptu dinner. He had peered at her for a moment, arms crossed and judging.

“You say that with more conviction than should be allowed.” He pointed out, raising a thin eyebrow. She sighed, glancing longingly in the direction of the restaurant’s kitchen, anxious for her free meal. Really, she should have been more appreciative, but as it was…

“Whatever. I was just making an observation.”

“That could get you hurt.”

“Not if you keep your end of the bargain.”

“That’s one way to look at your situation.”

Haruhi Fujioka sent the businessman a frown so far from amused it was almost comical. She released another sigh, and slumped against the leather booth seat in defeat. This man was so frustrating.

“If you’re going to pull the rug out from under me, at least warn me beforehand so I can go find another job.”

“You have nerve, making such a demand.”

“Yeah, well, you have nerve for taking me out to all these nice places, giving my father a job he’s terrible at, and then implying that you’re going to take it all away.”

Kyouya Ootori’s lips curled into the smile she hated.

“It’s part of my job.”

“As a snake or a liar?”

He raised his brow again, waiting to see if she would shrink down into the cushions in the same manner everyone else who spoke ill of him to his face did. As to be expected, her posture didn’t change, and her focus easily switched back to gazing at the kitchen. Scare tactics never worked on her. This girl was interesting.

“As the one protecting you from your own vulnerability.”

Haruhi, taken by surprise, perked up and looked at him. That was a first. Usually he went on about how much effort he was putting into funding her two-person family, how troublesome it was to get them jobs, how much time went into what he did. He would usually go on to slip out his false motives, his pseudo-reaping of benefits. She knew better. What he was looking for was still a mystery to her, though.

“I can take care of myself.” She responded defensively, furrowing her eyebrows.

“Then why did I find you and your father on the street, penniless, starving and approached by questionable men asking for the money your father owed?”

“Because…”

“You should be more grateful I’m looking after you. Lower class, stuck in a caste you can’t escape from…without me you would-”

“Have nothing, you’ve told me before. And I’ve thanked you every time.”

“As you should. I’ve risked quite a lot in sheltering two of you.”

Kyouya watched as she bit her inner cheek to refrain from saying something too tactless. While she held no fear of him, she tended to find some self-control in how she spoke to him. Sometimes, he figured, what she had to say was too rude, even for someone as blunt as her. It was her attitude that added to the gossip of his upper class world, as if her father’s questionable gender hadn’t put an extra stain on his reputation.

“Your debt has gone down significantly since you and your father have started working for me.”

“…That’s good to hear. I won’t have to deal with you anymore, soon.”

But it was the danger she posed that kept him so involved in the game.

“Not exactly. Your father will be relieved eventually with some profit to speak of. You, however, will never be relieved.”

Haruhi sputtered, and her eyes widened.

“And who says that? The books or you?”

Kyouya only smirked.

“I suggest against grinding your teeth like that, Haruhi. I might need them.”
