It wasn’t possible. She was a stupid, whiny hostage who wouldn’t shut up no matter how many times he yelled at her. For a while his threats worked, but she had learned the secret to getting under Mello’s skin and around his gun. Mello suspected that Matt gave her tips on what to say and how to say it, because it hardly took any time at all for her to become a pro at making Mello storm off in anger.
And deep down, Mello couldn’t help but respect that.
But he couldn’t like her! Couldn’t!! He was with Matt. Matt was his; they fucked, they kissed, they were together, he was gay. With Matt. A boy.
So he couldn’t have started to have a soft spot for this brown-haired, doe-eyed, bright girl with an angel’s smile! It was impossible!! He liked boys, not girls. Especially girls that were Kira’s sister!
…Or hostages. That, too.
He shot at an empty chocolate box before stomping over to crush it beneath his heels. He was pissed, and completely confused. Sayu had begun to worm her way to Matt’s level on Mello’s people-scale (she would never surpass him if she could even get close, they had been friends since they were children and they were both unhealthily devoted to each other) and Mello didn’t like it one bit.
But in the end, he had to let her go back home, and his chest hurt when he realized that she would no longer be near him. He tried to deny it, tried to ignore that he had possibly loved her, too.
…Odd, instead of being in denial over a boy, he was in denial about loving a girl.
