I rule philosophy of language. and the meaning of life. all are crushed beneath me in tutorials. oh the joy.

it's also a nice way to move on from yesterday, which was just a complete ass of a day.

losing a hero is just harsh, way too harsh. R.I.P. Eddy Guerrero.

All I've heard about twin earth so far (Putnam, right?) is the whole "If it's like water in absolutely every other respect but the chemical makeup is somehow different in some way, is it still water?" thing. Which was quite cool. Putnam in general seems to be quite a clever and reasonable guy...as far as epistemology is concerned, anyway. He kicked the brain in a vat argument's ass with some fancy phil. of lang. move to do with reference.

Again, I wish you were in my tutorials. You and I could be a TEAM! :-O

yeah, 'tis putnam. the argument is quite nice, it's basically saying that meaning is found in the reference/extension, ie: what the thing actually is. your belief only makes up part of the meaning. a good example is: people now have different beliefs about water (ie: that it's h2o) than people in 1750 did. yet they both refer to the same thing. water was h2o in 1750, it was in 1950, and will probably be in 2050. so how can meanings be psychological/in the head?

booyah.
