I'm fairly positive that MySpace was created so that you are exposed to people from different areas of the world so that you can make new friends. People who are on your "friends list" may not know, but that's the prerogative of MySpace. One thing that most people misconstrue about MySpace is that it is a blog. I do not consider a blog; it is not well suited for blogging. Therefore, it's more of a Facebook or friendster thing than a Livejournal or Xanga.
Long story short, MySpace is to meet new people, therefore it's expected that you have unknown people on your list.
