I don't know how it works in other Olympic sports like track and field, but in rowing each year they have a World Championships regatta, in which all of the Olympic boat classes are represented, plus a few others. yo, this is totally unrelated, but im gonna be in lucerne, switzerland for a day this summer!!

olympic silver would be cooler, since everyone knows and is more likely to watch the olympics.

I'd go for world champs gold. I've had a lot of silvers in my life, and gold is more satisfying. So what if you can't say you won (or placed 2nd in) the olympics, it's way more satisfying to say "I was the best fencer/rower/lifter in the world in 2006". (fyi I decided to write this before reading the other responses, so I'm not just being disagreeable).
