At the close of every workday since we moved to Lakeview last August, I exit the Purple line train at the Belmont stop and walk east toward the lake front.  It wasn't until yesterday, though, that I took notice of the J. Toguri Mercantile store (which is subtitled "Oriental Gift Shop", ha) on Belmont near Clark and decided to enter rather than walk ( Read more... )

Wow! Awesome post. I had no idea about that story.

I did, however, stop in the store many times. I know the guy you're talking about. Interestingly, I mostly stop there for the kewpie in the floppy bottle too! I recently got some with wasabi in it. It's green! Soooo very good on frites.

Yes, I'm calling them frites. Do not object.

Ah, cool! I actually haven't tasted Kewpie mayonnaise yet, so I'm having fun with the online reviews (ha!) that range from "it's the best mayonnaise on earth" to "OMG...water! water! And a toothbrush, stat!" I'm not really into mayonnaise (Tristan loves the stuff), but I *could* be persuaded to participate in a double-blind mayonnaise-on-frite taste test...anyone? anyone?

(Oh, wait! I almost forgot...Filter serves a mayo-wasabi concoction with their sweet potatoe fries. Mmmmmmm...tasty!)
