About two months ago, my friend Bernie asked me to participate in a themed benefit exhibit entitled "Hallow-Xplo".  The October show featured works from several artists (photographers, painters, sculpters, etc.) covering their favorite artists, and performances by seven bands covering their favorite bands.  Bernie's contribution was a ( Read more... )

I love the pictures!!!!

I do have one question, with the lighting - was it your equipment or studio equpiment? It seems to be a little dark on the face, and I was wondering if this was intentional or studio lighting.

I use Speedotron Brown Line units. The angel photo was tricky. The shadow density is essentially equal to that of the original photo, but it presents differently depending on your platform and browser (more so than any other photo I've ever created.) I sent the photo to my friends before printing to solicit feedback...I specifically asked about shadow density and color balance. The responses were all over the place, which was surprising. It all made sense after a friend told me that the photo, when viewed in Safari, looked as he expected it to, but that it didn't present as well (was too dark and warm) when viewed in Firefox and IE (he's a Mac user.) Part of this has to do with the current state of color-managed browsers, part has to do with monitor brightness. I don't fully understand why the angel photo seems particularly sensitive to different environments...it drove me nuts for about a week (during which time I tried everyone's patience as I tweaked the photo a million times) before I just decided to leave it alone.

Ah ok. Then that makes sense. I love the picture as a whole, but the lighting shows horribly on my browser. LOL. That was really a nice idea though. Good luck with fasion, I'm still trying to get my foot in the door with weddings. Any advice on how to get clients for weddings?

Yeah, I know...I looked at the image on my monitor at work and said "woah! That's not good..." It looks *completely* different than it does at home (or at the Apple store or on the monitor of my friends who are also in color-managed environments.) I know I did something wrong, but I don't know what yet...I'll get it sorted out soon enough, though. I wanted to post this to keep track of my progress, something I've been doing since I first started taking photos three years ago ( ... )

Thanks...yah, one thing I forgot to mention is that the lady who made the wings totally fucked them up. lol. I think I subconsciously blocked that out when I put this post together. I basically had to completely transform the wings in photoshop, effectively neutralizing any benefits from having them custom made...this was the first time I reshaped/transformed an object in photoshop, and I'm really surprised it turned out OK. I was completely out of my element and *far* beyond my current skill level every step of the way...

As for the factice, I composited in the perfume bottle from Mondino's original photo. I had Bettina hold air...getting her fingers in the right position on set was more work than I would have imagined, lol.
