Because the books are not, in my opinion, very original. The movies, on the other hand, have wonderful artwork, sets, costumes, and casting, all of which more than make up for the suckitude of the books.
The themes of the books are not original, but how many stories haven't been told before? Making it look like Star Wars is humorous, but as we know, Star Wars is a prime example of recycled story elements.
I think the books are well-written. (The earlier ones, more so.) I might like the movies better if I had not read the books and known all the elements that were left out. I think some of it is noticeable exclusive of the books. (i.e., doesn't quite feel right)
I'm definitely a bigger fan of the books than the movies. I can definitely see people feeling otherwise, but the quoted humor piece didn't make me think "HP movies good, HP books bad" at all.
