Agnus Dei

Even though the Catholic faith has deemed my lifestyle unacceptable and condemned me and my "kind" to hell...there is a part of me that can't let it go completely. I spent plenty of time going to Mass when I was younger, particularly when my grandmother had any say in it ( Read more... )

ok, the jew commenting on catholicism. this won't work.

i just... there's something so inherently vivid in latin text that just doesn't translate without losing an enourmous amount of lustre and illumination.

I feel the same way about opera. People need to learn to feel music. It's not always about the words.

you say this like this is a skill people can develop like learning to ride a bike. darling, you were born a prodigy of this. i don't think there are many people who feel music the way you do. but it's something, i know, i've admired about you... and have learned a lot about from you over the years.

i'm suddenly understanding the significance for why and when rome... just... once again, you've stunned me into this babbling stupor.

Don't worry, I didn't really expect anyone to comment on this entry. Once you start referencing ancient philosophers, you know you're pretty much done for ;)

But I knew you'd understand my intent.

B-b-b-but, I just know that everyone could come to appreciate opera on some level if they just tried...I know they could! /whine

Rome is a powerful place for me. I'm glad you were there. And you're cute when you're in a babbling stupor.

Former Catholic boy here. Well, sort of. My mom is Catholic and used to teach religious studies in our basement. I liked the Latin better for the exact reasons you said; it's beautiful and even if you can't understand it, you can feel it and I always thought that if you were going to believe in a religion, it should be felt.

That was a beautiful dissertation really.

I agree with you about opera, but perhaps I'm biased because I can also speak so many laguages. But the power is not inherently in the words, but in the melodies and the sounds.

And I'm glad you left it in Latin because there is something lost when translated. There always is.

Feeling what's tangible is easier, baby. Unfortunately it's how most will always appreciate the shit that goes on around them. Your words touched my senses and I thank you for that.
