Think about it this way. People aren't pitying you or trying to insinuate that you're not okay, or that you're weak-willed; people are just making sure that their favorite little Nick is doing all right. And people take comfort in the fact the someone else has problems too; someone who is depressed takes solace in the fact that one of their best friends is depressed too, and it helps take the edge off.
So think of it as two soldiers walking through the jungle. Nerves tense, the enemy could be anywhere, and death could be right around the corner. Full of doubts and unspoken fears, one punches the other in the arm and says, with a certain amount of false bravado, "Hey, you okay?" And they are both comforted.
but when people say that this "mood" has been going on for a while and I have no idea as to how I'm appearing when i'm perfectly fine, "You okay?" gets bothersome.
Same situation: about 5 minutes of asking about his partner, he repeats the question with the same "yeah, I'm fine." answer...He then continues to ask him that question in 3 minute intervals...After being tired of giving the same answer, the partner then shoots him in the face to give himself some peace and quiet...
It's not that I don't appreciate it, it's just that it's just sooo dumb to hear it time and time again and then to hear that I've been acting like this for a few weeks. My reaction to the whole thing was the equivalent to "WTF?!?" except w/o speech. So that was just my little "I'M FINE!!!!" post cept I tried not to be angry about it.
