The Soul Calibur series is the only weapons-based fighting series worth playing, so it occupies that special market niche certainly. But it was also a sequel to a Dreamcast launch title/killer app that game magazines had practically canonized. While it was available for all consoles, each version had a single unique character. The GameCube version ( Read more... )

Oh, gaming.

I've been toying with working out a version of nethack (or another roguelike) that could be played on a console. With the advent of the XBox Live! Arcade, I've been wanting to see a solid roguelike experience spread to the masses.

Anyways.

Huh, a roguelike with arrows and 6-10 other buttons...

it _sounds_ weird, but I really don't think it would be too unwieldy. pad for movement, a button for using magic devices (any magic device), a button for magic (mage or prayer or whatever), a button for inventory (using pad to select, buttons to wear, drop, destroy), a button for equipment (similar to inventory), a button for firing a missile. that's five. the x-box has, what? six plus back and two triggers. so, add door jamming and bashing and tunnelling. back could toggle running.

if you made the triggers inventory and equipment, I don't think that'd even feel weird.

...and for starters, it wouldn't be too hard to make a Final Fantasy-style menu system.

This sounds like it might be interesting to do on the side... though I'm way too busy right now, and I'm not really sure when that will change.

It would be most neat to join forces with some other Roguelike, but it would also take a lot of work to simplify the interface of something like that. NetHack is just too complex, and Angband's code is huge and hard to grok... but I wonder how hard it would be to give an existing Roguelike a simpler interface, without building FaBand from scratch.

Rob makes fun of me because I've always wanted a GameCube. I like the Mario games! He says it's for kids, and I was like..."Duh. That's about my level of ability when it comes to video games." Plus it reminds me of being a kid, except we never had anything as cool as Mario Party. :)

For now though, we're hooked on Warcraft (I know, it's sad) so there's really no point.
