I never give money to the Red Cross anymore. Living in Florida, we are under hurricanes or warnings for them. I've been through, I don't know how many hurricanes in my 45 years here, and I have NEVER seen the Red Cross here. I've been through other disasters and the Red Cross would be happy to sell you a blanket.
The bottom line while living in Miami and Port St. Lucie (where we got hit the hardest) was neighbors and friends. The Red Cross isn't going to cut the tree off the house, your neighbors will. A friend will let you crash at their house 150 miles away just to get out of the chaos and mess.

What can be found is the federal or state government handing out cheese and the military has to come in just to protect the tractor trailers carrying the cheese or other goods from looters.
