Gwen straightened out the dress one more time before taking a deep breath and stepping out of the bathroom. She knew it couldn’t be possible, but she could swear she felt everyone’s eyes on her. She knew what they were thinking, that she didn’t belong. It was true, she never would have set foot in a place like this if it wasn’t for Elena. But they couldn’t know that, so she pulled back her shoulders, held her chin up and walked backto her table, the fingers not clutching her purse crossed in the hopes that she wouldn’t stumble and fall.
Elena was the sweetest girl in the whole wide world, but she had the worst luck in men, so Gwen had taken it upon herself to vet Elena’s next boyfriend. Which was a good thing, considering the propensity with which Vivian handed out Elena’s phone number to virtual strangers if they were “hot enough”.
Both she and Elena had agreed that Gwen would be at the restaurant for each first-time date, sitting at a table nearby and keeping watch; it seemed like good sense after the Giorgio debacle, which was certainly written down somewhere in the worst date record books. Hence the dress borrowed from Elena who fit just a bit too snug for her taste and the four inch heels she was having a wee bit of trouble walking in. She finally reached the velvet-covered booth, sliding into it. Elena gave her a short wave, from her own table in the middle of the restaurant and she waved back.
This ‘Arthur’ guy they were expecting was new into town and was supposedly a total babe, but had trouble talking to women, thus his single status.
She was taking a sip of the glass of white wine she’d ordered - courtesy of Elena - when he walked into her line of sight and she swallowed wrong, fighting down the urge to splutter.
“You must be Elena. Hi, I’m Arthur.” He bedazzled her with a smile and her lips could do nothing but curve up in a smile too. “You are more beautiful in person that I’d imagined.” He sat down in the chair facing her, his eyes flicking over her face, her shoulders, even her chest for a quick second before flitting back up to her face. “You have lovely hair. I would love to run my fingers through it.”
Gwen smothered her cough, closing her eyes to remind herself that he was Elena’s date. “I’m sorry, but you are-“
“I’m sorry, that was probably creepy, right?” Arthur blushed and he ducked his head down. “I swear I’m not a creep but Merlin says I have a tendency to say things that make me sound that way.” He reached out to pick up her left hand in his. “I promise you that I will not attempt anything tonight, or any other night, unless you want me to of course, in which case you probably would make the first move, wouldn’t you?”
His thumb was lightly stroking the back of her hand and it was extremely distracting. In the periphery of her vision, she noted the WTF expression that Elena was sporting and it gave her the jolt she needed. “Arthur, really, I am flattered but-“
“Oh no.” His face immediately fell and he laid down her hand on the table gently. “I’ve already blown this, haven’t I?” He scrunched up his nose. “I’m sorry, I know that I can come on too strong, but really, if you just-“
She shook her head no, her curls bouncing lightly around her face. “Arthur, I promise you it’s not that-“
“Then please say you will give me another chance!” He pleaded, picking up her hand again between both of his. “I would never cheat on you, I would never raise my hand to you, I would never disrespect you in any way. Please.” He looked at their joined hands and then up at her, a light smile on his lips. “We would have beautiful children.”
Well. That plucked away the last remaining shred of decency she had. Oh, what the hell. She’d tell him she wasn’t Elena in the near future, before they started practicing for kids, if not definitely before the wedding.
