“Will that be all, milady?” Gwen blew out the candle by the windows.
“Yes, thank you for your service. I think I’ll retire early tonight.” Morgana lifted her hand up to her forehead. “I feel strange.”
“Then it is definitely wiser you lie down right away.” Gwen folded back the sheets, helping Morgana to the bed and tucking her in carefully. “If you need anything, I will be in my room.” Her ‘room’, the tiny chamber next to Morgana’s apartments not fit for a mouse to live in; nonetheless, things would soon change. She hid her smirk as she stepped out into the hallway. Morgana was fast asleep and stay that way until morning, thanks to the potion Gwen’d mixed in with the soup. Meeting Merlin in the woods surrounding Camelot and coming back undetected meant she needed the entire night off. After the first few times, evading the guards was child’s play.
She hadn’t been waiting long when Merlin stepped into the clearing, clearly displeased judging by the look on his face.
“Why have you called me here? What is the hurry? We should keep to the agreed times only, Gwen.”
“Relax, Merlin. No one saw me leaving the castle. Besides, this meeting was necessary.” Gwen produced an empty vial from under her cape. “I have run out of powder.”
Merlin took it from her hand, his scowl turning into a smile. “Good girl. Have they started showing the signs yet?”
“Morgana moreso than Arthur; she is having quick flashes of power. She set fire to her bedroom drapes just yesterday.” Gwen smiled, crossing her arms over her chest. “Of course, I, the ever dutiful maidservant put it out and kept her secret. She thinks I’m her best friend.”
“Careful, be sure not to put in too much at once.” Merlin wrapped his fingers around the vial, his eyes flashing golden quickly and when he opened his hand, the vial was filled up. “We want the progression to be gradual. How are things with Arthur?”
Gwen shrugged nonchalantly but Merlin was staring at her intently. “Do not let your memories deter you from our ultimate goal, Gwen. This is not the time for an emotional” he spat the word out with disgust,“reunion with your childhood friend. Arthur would kill you if he knew what you were.”
“You don’t think I know that?” Gwen snapped. “I am very well aware of the fact that Arthur and I will never truly be. I am just enjoying our time together.” She lowered her eyes to the ground. “I truly believe that Arthur is different from Uther, that he will bring about change. He can be taught that all magic isn’t evil.”
Merlin sneered. “Foolish girl, just a few weeks in his company and you think you know him. I was his manservant for an entire year. If Arthur was as good and noble as you say, he wouldn’t stand by as innocents are executed.”
“Merlin-“
“No. the only way we can make Uther understand is to awaken the dormant magic abilities of his ward and precious heir. Let’s see what he does when his own family is magic!” Merlin bellowed, walking past Gwen to stand a few feet away. “We have come too far to get distracted now, Gwen. You need to realize what is at stake and act accordingly. You need to remember your mother.”
Gwen wiped a tear swiftly. “I... I apologize. You’re right. Thank you for making me see reason.”
Merlin walked back over to her, setting his hands on her shoulders. “I know you miss being away from the camp, but I promise you that the end is near. Hold on, Gwen.” He enfolded her in his arms and Gwen cherished the moment, for they were rare and far in between. The camp provided her with the sense of belonging that Camelot never would. She didn’t miss it as much when she was with Arthur, but Merlin was right. Of course he was, he was their leader for a reason. She pulled back, swiping her hand across her face.
“Best get back before your absence is noted.” She nodded wordlessly. “Our day will come soon. Have faith.”
That gave her the strength to turn around and head back to Camelot, securing her in the knowledge that it was the right course of action. For her mother.
