Natalia was, as always, peeking around doors.
Some people told her it was unbecoming for such a fine, upstanding young lady to spy as if she was some sort of common whore, always waiting to attack her brother- but she didn’t care. It was what she wanted to do, after all, and nothing would stop her. But tonight was different. She peered around the door to her brother’s room, looking for the large lump that indicated her brother was in bed, asleep. (She liked to watch him in his sleep, her hands running through his hair, whispering her marriage plans to him as he snored lightly--) But tonight, there was no one in the large four-poster bed. Natalia wasn’t sure where her brother could have gone; he had been going to bed only an hour ago, hadn’t he?
She heard murmurs down the hall, a higher, more panicked voice and a rumble that could only be her brother’s. Padding softly on the plush rugs, she took a look around the corner nearest the voices, spotting figures only a short distance down the hall.
“Don’t you want to make me happy, Katya?” Ivan’s voice was distinguishable above what Natalia thought was the sound of her sister crying; crying over what? was her first thought. Ivan had pressed her up against the wall. Katya was sobbing, sobbing uncontrollably, her hands pressed against her chest for protection. Natalia took a step to ask her siblings what was going on but stepped off of the rug, onto the bare wood flooring. Wooden joints creaked; Ivan turned his head to look for the source of the sound and smiled. Natalia’s heart raced. She was certain that Ivan had seen her, but she hadn’t known that he was in one of those moods before, those fits of anger where everything he did and said was like ice: calculated and utterly deadly. “If you want to make me happy, you’ll do as I say. We are one, yes?” His Russian was clear and precise, devoid of any happiness his usual facade held.
“Y-yes...” Katya sniveled, her tears still falling. Ivan leaned in, kissing her harshly on the lips. His hands moved her own, feeling her breasts through the light fabric of her nightgown. Katya whimpered, the noise muffled by their contact. Natalia wanted to stop it, but was frozen in place. She was too frightened of her brother when he was like this to really say anything, as much as she hated herself for it. She could only watch as her brother lifted up the hem of Katya’s nightgown, his hand touching her most intimate parts. Katya cried; oh, she cried so much, and Natalia felt guilty for wishing that her brother was doing that same thing to her, and wondering why she was the one that was always left out.
Natalia’s stomach churned as she watched Ivan finger her sister, feeling herself grow more jealous with each passing second. Finally, she couldn’t stand it any longer; her rage grew uncontainable, and she ran to them, using her strength to attempt and pull them apart.
“What are you doing!? Katya, Brother, no!” She meant to sound worried. Instead, she only sounded jealous and vengeful, glaring at Katya in her hatred. Ivan looked thoughtful, weighing this emotion his youngest sister had against the feelings he felt for Katya. Natalia stood shivering, her arms crossed in what she hoped was an intimidating pose. But she knew that no amount of threats of marriage and description of their life together would strike fear in Ivan when he was in this state.
“Sister, did you want to tell me something?” Ivan’s voice was steely, obviously angry after being interrupted. Katya was still crying, and Natalia stepped in front of her, momentary protection overcoming her deep-seeded jealousy for her own big sister.
“Brother, I...” What could she tell him that he didn’t already know? It wasn’t like she kept her feelings a secret; she told him, and told him often, that she loved him and wanted to marry him as soon as they got out of Hogwarts. So instead she stood silent, chin held up in defiance, uncrossing her arms and holding them out in some sort of feeble protection for her sister. But her mind told her that she really wanted the same sort of treatment that Katya received. She wanted to be abused, to be forced against the wall and touched like a woman, not like a little sister. Her face was unsure as he studied her.
“No need to worry, Natalia.” Ivan smiled, a deadly and frightening smile that made Katya gasp and Natalia lose her resolve slightly. Ivan took no notice of that; instead, he leaned in, kissing his younger sister. She dropped all of her desire to protect Katya, letting her need to be her brother’s favorite overwhelm her. Her arms encircled his neck, tugging him down to her for only a brief instant before he pulled away. Immediately, she felt ashamed; she had shown him (and Katya, even) what she really wanted, and he could use that to his advantage. But he did not. Instead, Ivan merely smiled once more, stepping back a few paces.
“This has been a pleasant evening, yes? I hope that we can continue this sometime. But now, I must go to bed. I hope you both have a pleasant night!” With that, Ivan walked back to his room. Katya turned Natalia around and pulled her close, murmuring in Ukrainian. It’s all right Natashechka, it’s all right, he didn’t mean it, we’re safe. Natalia let her sister hold her while her own brain tried to comprehend what had happened. She wasn’t entirely sure what was real and what she had imagined. It’s all right, we can go back to our room now. We’ll sleep together tonight, just this once- I know you’re a big girl, but everyone needs comfort sometimes...
Natalia could only whisper a soft yes to her sister, letting herself be guided back to their room. She let Katya brush through her hair once more before bed and let Katya kiss her on the cheek, saying nothing. As they pulled the covers over themselves, Natalia safely enveloped in her sister’s warm embrace, Natalia finally gathered her thoughts and spoke.
“Katya are you...all right?” Her voice was small. and Katya petted her hair, trying to reassure her.
“Of course I am, Natasha. Of course I am.”
