Conundrum: The Red Sox are trailing the Yankees by two in the east, and are tied with the White Sox for the Wild Card. The Yankees are playing the White Sox. Whom do I root for (ignoring for a moment the maxim "never root for the Yankees")? Or do I simply view it as a situation with no downside ( Read more... )

Only slightly relating to the situation... cronos69 August 9 2006, 14:44:30 UTC
Something similar comes to mind on how I wondered if I would ever gamble on sports. I'm not a gambler at all; I almost never bet with money, I don't play cards, I don't go to casinos(been to one in my entire life and it was in the Bahamas for Senior year spring break in high school; lost $200 or so).

Anyway, were I to start gambling on sports, I think I would bet small amounts against my team all the time, or perhaps only bet more significant amounts against them in playoff/championship games. Win-win situation. If the team loses, I get money. If the team wins, I may lose a little money, but that fact would be consoled by the team winning. A situation with seemingly little downside(especially if the team happened to perform very poorly for a significant stretch).

I don't know if you're a gambler yourself, but it's just something I've wondered about for a while.

Were I a gambler (I play poker for small stakes ($5 buy-ins, usually) and have played slots a few times; I don't think that counts) I would be pretty wimpy about it. The biggest risk I could see myself taking would be putting maybe ten dollars on a longshot to win at the beginning of the season. Other than that, I would probably just bet on my team. If they lose, I'm already pissed, but if they win, hey, money ( ... )

That last sentence was confusing: I haven't been wondering for a while whether or not you gamble, just what people think about the above situation.

Hi,

I wandered in from grammarpolice and thought I'd say "hello". As a Red Sox fan, I was in that same situation myself. However I found that all came down to the fact that I really, really, really loathe the Yankees. **sigh** Wasn't this weekend just devastating?

I also noticed that you sing opera. Have you worked with Will Mouat or Rob McPherson before? The former is my former voice teacher and the latter is one of my best friends who has sung all over the country including National Opera, NYC Opera and (next year) The Met.

Oh, and Happy Birthday. I read your previous post. 30 is not big deal. And, if you think about it, you're in one of those rare and magnificent professions where being older is actually an advantage.

There is actually something strangely liberating about your team being out of contention (they're not, entirely, but they'll have to do something pretty damn quick). You can just stop worrying about it and get on with your life. Plus, the playoffs are stressfull--the last five years have not been good for my blood pressure (once, just once, couldn't they make it easy?). It also helps that I've got two teams to root for, although if Isringhausen doesn't shape up, it'll be a long, dark October ( ... )
