Personality; Ai has a tendency to come off as a very shallow, very narcissistic young woman whose only agenda she bothers to care about is her own. Indeed, her very first act in the game was the propositioning of the antagonist to skip afternoon classes with her, revealing a rather whimsical, reckless attitude that had less to do with rebellion and more to do with the fact that it was merely something she felt like doing. And as the protagonist quickly witnesses - what Ai wants, Ai gets. The entire outing consisted of Ai shopping to her heart’s content, taking advantage of the protagnist’s good nature to have him lug around all of her bags while she reveled in the fact that she was out there having fun while everyone else was cooped up in class, none the wiser.
The protagonist isn’t the only boy she had apparently gotten wrapped around her little finger. There are quite a number of rumors that float around about Ai thanks to her attitude and appearances, some of which include having her very own sugar daddy and being about as loose as loose can possibly get. While it’s apparently true that she strings along and discards boys according to her whims, it’s clear from the time spent with her and her reaction to overhearing such talk that everything else are just plain lies. She admits to the protagonist that she’s heard them all before, but that they mean nothing to her because they come from people who don’t even know a thing about her. However, even as she says all this, it’s obvious that she is still quite affected by their hurtful words.
This is pretty much Ai in a nutshell - she puts up a lot of fronts to hide who she really is. This is because, when she was much younger, she had been teased and bullied frequently for being overweight and awkward, even going so far as to nickname her “Piggy-hara.” When her family suddenly struck gold in the land business and decided to move, Ai took it as an opportunity to reinvent herself. Taking cues from fashion magazines, she underwent a strict diet and began to style and dress herself that quickly gave her the sort of idol attention she’d been hoping for as one of the sought-after, pretty girls in school. To match her new look, she took on a new personality as well, taking care to come off as strong and confident as she had always wanted to be, but it all quickly went to her head, and instead she comes off as more arrogant and callous.
Armed with this new-found self-confidence and the money/status/looks to back it up, Ai doesn’t hesitate to do what she wants, say what she wants, whenever she wants. She is spoiled and haughty, casually and callously turning down boys whom she deems “unworthy” of her attentions. It seems now that she’s finally got the status she wanted, she doesn’t let anything hold her back anymore. Indeed, her careless behavior has gotten worrisome enough that she’s made the guidance counselor’s watch list for behavior and attendance. While she insists she doesn’t do this that often, that she’s been “a good girl” since then, she still doesn’t seem able to help herself in indulging every once in a while.
She’s a rather pushy young woman, unyielding when it comes to her desires, and rather shameless when it comes to attaining them. She has no reservations bossing someone around to do her bidding, especially someone like the protagonist who lets her get away with it. In fact, she’s so self-centered that her guidance counselor made her the manager of Kou Ichijo’s basketball team just so she could learn to “put others before herself for once.” But it wasn’t until after her friendship with the protagonist that she actually began to change... Or rather - that she finally began to accept who she really is.
This is the side of Ai that not many others are privy to. This is what makes Ai one of the game’s most difficult and complex social links, because it is not only easy to reverse her social link, but she is also the only character in the game whose social link can actually be broken. This shows that Ai is not only a very complicated character, but she also happens to be a very vulnerable one. She had shown little bits and pieces of this during her outings with the protagonist, revealing a young woman who didn’t believe in relationships that did not have “ulterior motives,” and one that needed the constant reassurances of someone whether it be about her looks or their feelings towards her. She displayed her vulnerability the best, however, when the protagonist had given her the unfortunate news that her then-crush, Kou Ichijo, had a crush on Chie Satonaka, a girl she’d been convinced could hardly compare to her in looks. She’d been so broken up over the indirect rejection that she had gone so far as to stand at the roof ledge of the school building, threatening suicide before the protagonist managed to stop her. She couldn’t understand why Kou chose someone like Chie over her, citing how she is much prettier, and isn’t that what guys are looking for?
She yearns for romance and love, yet she’s a very breakable girl, guarded and skeptical when it comes to other people’s feelings and kindness towards her. She makes constant remarks about the protagonist’s kindness, how weird it is, how he shouldn’t be wasting any of it on a girl like her. She realizes she isn’t exactly the nicest person around, and can’t seem to fathom why anyone would bother to be nice to her without getting much in return.
In the game, Ai represents the Moon Arcana. The Moon symbolizes a very emotional person who presents both a light and dark side. When she’s light, she’s very bright and presents unexpected opportunities, like playing hooky during a school day. But when she’s dark, she can get very gloomy and depressing. She is clearly a person who is run by her emotions, letting her fancies get the better of her, and often acting before really thinking things through.
Fortunately, by the end of her social link (friendship route), Ai manages to really grow as a person. She confesses to the protagonist that she can really hate herself, always hurting the people she cares about, but she reveals that, through his help, she has found a reason to live. While she is still searching for at least one redeeming quality in herself, something to prove her worth, she was able to realize that she’d been pretending to be brave all this time, and that the protagonist had been kind enough to try and save her. She figures if she manages to find and surround herself with people like him, it’s a “good enough reason to keep going.” Through the protagonist, she finds her strength, though she still admits to not being good at being alone, and asks for his strength and stability in remaining by her side as she tries to figure it all out. She gifts him with her compact, telling him that people like him will be her mirror from then on. So that she can find her reflection in his eyes, and won’t be able to forget who she is or be able to lie to herself anymore.

[ when the feed begins, there appears on the screen the face of a very pretty, yet very skeptical young woman. her lips (perfectly glossed in this season’s most popular shade - “miss kiss bliss”) are pursed and hesitant, her golden eyes sharp as they scrutinize the hologram before her. ]
...is that it? [ soon, skepticism gives way to a rather bland look. she glances down at the bracelet around her wrist, unimpressed. ] Shouldn’t there be, I don’t know, more?
[ you can’t see it, asgard (except maybe you can, in the way her lips tremble and the way her cheeks color), how frightened and wary she really is. but soon, her gaze sharpens and returns to the screen, looking almost accusing. ] I’m supposed to help save this world, aren’t I? “Bring life and color” back into it, or something, right? Well shouldn’t there be something more? Something better? [ nevermind she’s got a nice little suite to herself, an entire world equipped to help her do just that. clearly, that isn’t nearly enough.
she scoffs, tossing a lock of golden curl over her shoulder. ] Sorry, I just don’t buy it.
Besides... Real Gods wouldn’t equip their saviors with such cheap costume jewelry. I’ve seen better quality in a vending machine.
