as for the shirt, ALWAYS USE A TEST BEFORE ACTUALLY DYING IT. Y'know??
but since you're using a shirt, hmm, it'll be tough. maybe if the shirt is long enough, you can test a piece of the bottom and see how it comes out? i imagine guy has his shirt tucked in or whatever. or it's really short.
you could always sew the shirt into the vest, you know what i mean??? if you just tuck it in, if it's too long, it'll make bunch marks... lol. hard to explain, but i hope you got what i'm tryin' to say. :P
