Alright kids, here's part two.
March 24-25: Flew back to DC on the 24th. Leaving Cali is always a sad occasion as I love going out there and enjoying the wonderful weather and all the different things to do. This trip was a bit more somber of course because of my grandmother but it was still a good trip. The next day I drove back to Richmond. Since last year Gabe and I had joined the Fess Parker winery's wine club where every quarter we would get sent two bottles of wine. Fess Parker himself had just died days before, so Gabe and I drank in his honor. We usualy drink a bottle each when we drink wine, but for some reason at this time we kept wanting more. We ended up having a total of 4 or 5 bottles, which had us quite hungover the next day!
March 28: This was the night of WWE Wrestlemania XXVI. Knowing my time in the US was dwindling I knew this would probably be the last pay per view that most of our old Game Stop crew would hang out together at. It was a great time, and also when Mitch and Melissa announced their pregnancy. I was off the next day, and was already dreading having to return to work.
April: As expected, going back to work was no easy task, given my very public opinion that I hated the place. At this point I was even sending out resumes to get jobs elsewhere, even though I would leave any job I had in late June to prepare for my Korea trip. No such luck in a new job though. I also started looking into getting my insurance license again so I could make some residual money down the line.
April 10: I took my Insurance exam, I considered myself very well prepared for it unlike the last time I took it in 2006 where I had to take it twice. I was first to finish and passed. Hell yeah. I felt real good, it was one of the first memorable really nice spring days that I remember also, so I opted to...you guessed it...call out of work the next day to give myself a three day weekend to celebrate. Went to Fallout that night and stayed out late.
April 16-18: This weekend Carlos and Jean came down to visit. In the evening I hung out with Liz and Drew at Alley Katz for a show where Little Pete's (from The Adventures of Pete and Pete!) band played. Afterwards I joined Carlos, Jean, and Gabe at Fallout. Saturday we hung out around Richmond, though I forget exactly what we did. I do specifically remember going to the Capital Ale House for dinner where I proceeded to order a "grilled cheeseburger" which essentially is a regular cheeseburger sandwiched between a grilled cheese sandwich! Calorie, Cholesterol, Cheese, Awesomeness overload! Carlos and Jean stayed at the nearby A Lofts which were really nice hotels. We hung out there for a minute before Gabe and I went home to pass out. On Sunday I called out yet again to hang out with Carlos and Jean, we ate Mexican food at El Caporal and it was good.
April 19-20: Attended a WWE live show at the Richmond Coliseum for Monday Night Raw! A great time with old friends and clearly did not work the next day! Photographic evidence of The Hart Dynasty celebrating their new Unified Tag Team Championship with their Uncle Bret "the Hitman" Hart
April 25-29: I actually worked a full week of work! The 29th was Daveida's last day of work as she was leaving to move to Hawaii with her family.
May: A rather quick month, which was good as I had, by this time, run out of much PTO to continue calling out every weekend. I was a little concerned, as I knew from the beginning that the company gave you all your PTO at the beginning of the year, but you still had to accrue it. So this meant that with me using almost all of it up by the end, and quitting in June, that I would have to owe them money. I don't regret any days I took off from that job what so ever though.
May 7: Went to Northern VA for some reason that I don't recall. Met up with Sara Gholam and Jake. I haven't seen her in a long time and never met Jake so it was good to get in touch.
May 13-15: By this time Gabe and I were going every Thursday to Whole Foods for their weekly 5 after 5 wine and food pairings that benefited local charities. They gave you a small glass of wine and you would walk around to different stations in the store that gave you different foods with what they thought would be a good wine pairing with it. It was fun to do. Usually after finishing the stations Gabe and I would hang out in the alcohol section and peruse what beers and wines they had on tap and enjoy a few pints and some times glasses of wine. On Friday I went back to NOVA, tried out the Dogfish Head Ale House in Seven Corners with Carlos, Jean, Sara, and Jake and went home to relax because I was tired. Saturday my family and I went out for my Aunt's birthday to Longhorn Steakhouse. I got a gigantic porterhouse that I only ate half of, and after lunch unfortunately drove back to Richmond because of goddamn work the next day.
May 28-31: This would be my last uses of PTO for work. I took off on my birthday, the 30th, so as to have a 4 day weekend (the 31st was Memorial Day so I had off anyway). On the 28th Gabe and I went to NOVA, and that evening hung out at Carlos and Jean's place, doing the usual drinking and watching of TV shows on their projector. On the 29th, Carlos, Jean, Gabe, Wags, Christine, Drew, Erik, Biro, Megan, and I went to the Dogfish Ale House for a birthday dinner of sorts for me. Afterwards a few of us went to Erik's house to hang out and meet his roommates and other buds. Then Wags, Gabe, and I went to Carlos and Jean's for a bit more drinking and hanging out.
The 30th, my actual birthday, Gabe, Carlos, and Jean joined my family and I to eat at Joe's Crab Shack for some awesome sea food that stuffed us. Gabe and I had planned to return to Richmond on this day, but before long we said "fuck it". After lunch we went back to Jean and Carlos' for a bit, then the four of us went to Eden Center for some Vietnamese bubble tea, and walked around. Next we were thinking of what to do for the evening, and so we decided to go to Wegman's for some stuff. We got wine, a cheese/cured meat tray, more cheese (especially the amazing Italian La Tur) and Brioche. We went back to Carlos and Jean's and snobbishly ate the amazing food. Photographic evidence time!
June 5: This day was the annual Beer, Bourbon, and BBQ festival at the Richmond International Raceway. I didn't go last year because of the trip Gabe and I took to Cali, but this year I would not miss it. The festival definitely fucks you up. You get unlimited tastings of beer and bourbon, and so within 10 or so minutes of being there we were already feeling quite drunk! Trashed in a record amount of time! It was fun though, but we didn't stay too long. After a few hours we were really drunk and ready to go home. We returned to my apartment where I passed out in a long nap and Carlos and Jean went back to their hotel. Because of being almost out of PTO, I only took a half day the next day.
June: This was it, since Daveida left in late April I was counting down the weeks and days until I had to leave my stinkin' job! June marked the last 3 or 4 weeks in the company. I started getting a little more slack, knowing even if they fired me I'd be totally fine with it. The time to begin finishing my affairs in Richmond had begun. I made sure I had all my documents sent to Chris Lee, who is one of the directors at Sullivan Language School where I work here in Korea.
June 23-24: The 23rd they (co-workers, not management) threw me a going away ice cream party which I loved. I got a card which was very nice too. Why this wasn't saved for my last day I do not know...perhaps they thought I would not show up on my last day? Regardless, my last day on the 24th was awesome. I ate down in the Cafeteria for the last time ever (probably the only thing I miss from that place minus my coworkers). After my shift was over I said goodbye to everyone. They all wished me luck and I was touched by how many good people I had met in my 7 months there. But I was done dammit! I don't think I had ever disliked a job as much. Verizon sucked near the end but it was still a decent place. I never disliked Gamestop but unfortunately you can't make a living there unless you're a manager. The branch wasn't bad either but it was getting worse.
June 24-July 2: This week I did absolutely nothing. I didn't really go out either. As a matter of fact, the last few weeks I didn't go out much like I used to. Normally I hit up Fallout every weekend but haven't since April, just didn't have the desire to. I do wish I could have gone there one more time before I left though.
July 2-4: Independence Day weekend was fun. On the 3rd Greta had one of her many parties and it was good to run into some old friends there whom I haven't seen in ages. Photographic evidence time!
On the 4th Megan had a party at her house where her brother provided a show with some not so legal fireworks. Had a few scares with one or two exploding at ground level that freaked us out, but it was fun none the less. Afterwards we hung out at Erik's house for a bit, then Son and I opted to call it a night early so I drove him home and I went home to relax.
July 6-8: On the 6th I had intended to go to the Korean Consulate to get my VISA interview as part of my last few steps to take before going to Korea. I was told on the phone by the consulate that I needed an official copy of my college transcript. That kind of pissed me off, because that meant the quickest way to do it was to go back to Richmond when I hadn't planned on doing so until the next week. I drove back to Richmond and ordered said transcript, which they told me would take two days to produce. Didn't do much those two days, and after picking up the transcript I had a bite to eat with Gabe at Carytown Burgers and Fries and went back up to NOVA.
July 10: This day was Minita's wedding. I wanted to see Kevin and Jackie's wedding too, but they were in Richmond and Minita was in NOVA. It was a nice ceremony, her and Stephen seemed really happy and I was really happy for them. I was pleased to see some old faces at the wedding too. Yup, photographic evidence-
July 13- Finally had my VISA interview. All went well, was to pick up VISA on friday!
July 16- My mom felt really sick today. She was havin Vertigo-like symptoms. The doctors said it was Vertigo but it also stems from some benign brain tumors she has. I picked up my VISA from DC and sat through about 3 or 4 hours of traffic just to get to Richmond! By the time I got to Richmond it was evening. I took a quick trip to the Mechanicsville Verizon Wireless store to see old co workers and ask a favor of Darnell, to cut off my cell phone when I left for Korea. I then met up with Vickie and Anne (old co workers from back at the branch in Wachovia) and they treated me to dinner at Silver Diner. Afterwards I came home to my apartment where Keli showed up and Phil came over and it was a nice Bocks Reunion (minus one who doesn't matter).
July 17- Ate Mexican food at El Caporal with Gabe, Phil met up with us again to go taste wine at Total Wine. Got to say goodbye to Aretha who has been a cashier there ever since we started going to the place. After relaxing for a few hours, Gabe, Phil, Rebekah, Drew, and I went to have sushi at Osaka steakhouse in Short Pump. I was most looking forward to the sea urchin roe and it did not dissapoint. Afterwards we grabbed a few drinks at TGI Fridays and watched Inception. Most of you know by now that Inception is at least a pretty decent movie. I liked it a lot. After the movie we kind of dispersed. I met up with my old buddy Beth at Empire and had a few drinks with her, caught up on life, and said goodbye to her.
July 18: Ate at City Dogs with Phil, Gabe, Rebekah, and Kit. Good little novelty hot dog place that also had really good chili cheese tots. That evening Gabe and I went to Hooters where we had a last gathering at a pay per view for me. It was really good to see every one of my old Gamestop buddies for the last time and say goodbye.
July 19: During the day I got some documents notarized and Apostilled, for dinner Gabe, Phil, and I went to the Capital Ale House for dollar burger night. Had a good burger and a quick drink, then I said goodbye to Phil and Gabe and I went to my last trip to Whole Foods. I had the intention of buying my favorite wine, The Prisoner, but then saw they had its more expensive and opulent sibling, Papillon. I decided to splurge my money and buy the Papillon, and Gabe and I split the price of La Tur cheese. It was everything I wanted and more. The Orin Swift line of wines never dissapoints, as is shown in my next photographic evidence-
July 20: Packed up the things in my room for the last time and bid farewell to the apartment in Richmond. I had lived at Honey Tree longer than any other place in my life other than at home. Despite that only being about 3 years, thats still quite a while and I hold many fine and horrible memories from those last three years. Definitely a closing chapter in my recent life. I got in my car and bid farewell to Richmond for the last time for at least a year or so.
July 23: My last hurrah in America. Greta was kind and awesome enough to throw me a going away party. Many good friends came out and bid me farewell. Greta had the idea to create a mural/sign thing that people could draw on and put messages on like a yearbook of sorts. I couldn't have asked for a better party, and was really touched that all those who came out did and put good stuff on my board, check it out-
July 24: My last full day in America. I spent all day with my family. Went out to eat lunch, then to Wal-mart with them just like how I used to as a kid. Ate dinner at Fuddruckers and then came home to start packing my shit up. I decided to try to only take one suitcase to Korea as I did not feel like taking two. I packed a good amount of clothes, video games, other stuff. I was allowed to check in two bags, and my guitar would be the other check in. I had already communicated with the airline and they weren't going to let me carry it on. In a backpack i stuffed some extra clothes and my xbox. By midnight or so I was packed up. I went to Carlos and Jean's house and hung out for a short while. I said my goodbyes to them. By the time I return they will be in Portland so that wraps up the many many awesome occasions of hanging out at their place in Fairfax and getting drunk and eating good food. That will have to continue in Portland!
Well that wraps up everything up until the day I leave for Korea. I will write an entry dealing with my trip and my experience so far at a later time. For now, I will end with what I miss about the U.S., as Korea is awesome but there are things from my former routines that I remember fondly
-Wine every Sunday
-Salt, as there is very little salt in food here
-Good Cheese
-Good Coffee
-Good Beer
-Friends (but am very grateful for new friends)
-My Car
-My Family
-Ethnic food other than Korean (though I have had the best Indian food ever here in Korea)
-Some American Food (though I am perfectly fine with going without it until I return)
I'll save what I love about Korea until the next entry.
Adios
